Shout out for Cobble Hill
I would really appreciate it if someone could give me the 411 on Cobble Hill in general and the blocks around amity and henry sts. Thanks in advance.

Pretty, safe, clean near good trains...Can be boring unless you are in late 30's with a family. It's for whites with strollers who frequent wine bars.

That's an interesting take Nanook. Not accurate, but interesting...
Here is the demographics for the Cobble Hill area you speak of...as you can see there are MANY more people without children (aka strollers) than with:
Family Households 7490
Non-Family Households 7753
Households With Children 3501
Households Without Children 11743
Average People Per Household 2.22

I know it was a harsh description but it's pretty true. It's not a neighborhood you want to live in if you aren't late 30's with kids...Not too much going on other than wine bars. I know - I lived in Boerum Hill forever and left recently for the reasons above.

it's pretty amazing. you should, you know, check it out in person if you can. just stroll around the blocks. the weather is perfect for it these days.

Yes, do go and see for yourself. It is a darling neighborhood - very clean, beautiful architecture, cute shops, cafes, etc...Go see for yourself. The movie theater is great too - $6 movies on Tuesday and Thursdays.
Cobble Hill is gorgeous - just a tad boring.

Hey Nanook, to where did you move? Is there anywhere in Brooklyn that isn't a little boring besides Williamsburg, which is a little too unboring?

I've been in Cobble Hill for four years and have never been to a wine bar there. I've been to plenty of the other bars on Smith Street, the bars on Atlantic in that area and a handful of the bars on Court Street, where I've gotten blind stinking drunk. But no wine bars.
You'll also find in Cobble Hill some of the best pizza in Brooklyn, some old school Italian joints, some of the best restaurants in Brooklyn. And a couple of Starbucks, too! (If that's your thing).
Plenty of trains. Couple of buses. Trader Joe's. Some fruit stands and delis. A decent beer distributor. Two movie theaters (I'm counting United Artist 12). Plenty of late 30s white people. But also plenty of Yemenis, Lebanese and Puerto Ricans.
But hey, it doesn't offer the hipster-minute-excitement of Williamsburg or the barber-shop-shootouts-during-the-day thrills of Fort Greene.
But as always, check it out for yourself and certainly don't believe anything you read on the web.

i have lived in cobble hill for 10 years and aside from upper smith street which is still very much old guard PR, the vibe is definately white 30 somethings w kids. it is beautiful and charming no doubt. there is tons to do if you like window shopping frivolous expensive crap, dining out, and drinking (emphasis on drinking). i would say that one of the truly great things about the nabe is that we have a really fantastic concentration of specialty food shops (butchers, cheese shop, bakeries, green grocers, sahadi's etc etc) so if you like to cook, or are foodie type, this place is deec.
as for wine bars; sample, jakewalk, that one over on henry st. there is another one about to open next to trader joes (turks and frogs). plenty of bars along smith and court for any mood you are in.
amity and henry is at the LICH ER right? you might want to reconsider your location unless you like ambulance noise and lots of foot traffic.

What are the rents for 2BR apartments (pet friendly) in Cobble Hill?
I need an apartment in a good elementary school zone for a reasonable rent if my first choices, Park Slope and Park Slope South don't work out.

It's just chock full of drugs and prostitutes... I'd be surprised if you could walk a block in Cobble Hill without getting a syringe stuck in your foot!

(I'd like to live there too... hoping my comments will knock the rent prices down a bit.)

Ha ha tybur6! I lived in Brooklyn for years and years, so I know Cobble Hill as a place to visit, go to movies, etc., but I don't know the rents any more. So you can't scare me!
I lived in Bklyn so long ago I knew a young woman who moved out of Park Slope because of the drug dealers! Now people are moving out because of the swarms of baby strollers.

I lived on Amity@Henry for two years.
The ambulances dont sound their siren on the outgoing neighborhood streets, and on incoming they come from the other direction, so you dont hear them.
Parking sucks.
Otherwise i loved it.

What is the typical rent for a decent, pet friendly 2BR apartment in Cobble Hill these days?
Posted by: cpchkp at March 14, 2009 5:43 PM
cpchkp,
the first problem is that there is almost no rental stock in CH proper.
The second problem is that most rentals are garden level floorthrus in brownstones. If you can handle the lack of light then maybe it doesnt bother you.
Expect to pay 2500 or so for a small 2br and closer to 3000 for an actual 2br.
CH is easily my favorite neighborhood in nyc. I would love to own one of those brownstones on henry or clinton street. The prices are out of control though :(
