Savvy Paint Store?
I want to customize some paint, i.e., make a color I almost like the color I like. Does anyone know of a paint store with a chromatically literate staff person? OK, specific issue: making BMoore color Soft Fern 2144-40 a little more pale....Thanks.

Deluxe Paint at 605 4th Ave. near 17th St. is a BMoore dealer. (718) 768-9494. I'd have to assume they're tint-savvy, but have only driven past many times, and never stopped in. I buy my BMoore in LIC. You might want to buy a sample first. Though on-screen colors vary by monitor, if it helps you can view the BMoore virtual fandeck at: http://tinyurl.com/caecfb

I have used this on-line paint store with great success. They can lighten or darken the tint/shade of any BM color in any size can and ship it (for a reasonable fee) to your doorstep. http://www.myperfectcolor.com/

Doing paint "mail order" sounds insane to me"; it's so subjective. BMoore dealers aren't necessarily savvy; maybe what I really need is an artist or are student...

I'm not even sure if "lighten" or "darken" is what I want; "more pale" is one way to describe my aim. Another is to make the color I mentioned more gray. Another is to make the color more like another color: 1501 Paris Rain. Any feedback welcome...

Take a look at Benjamin Moore's introduction to understanding color at this page: http://tinyurl.com/derp29 It'll introduce you to the difference between hue, value, shade, tint and tone. From the uncertainty of your post, I'd strongly recommend experimenting with a paint sample before buying a full gallon: http://tinyurl.com/cja6cv
A dealer is not a stock clerk at a big box store. See whether you don't change your opinion once you've actually discussed your project with one.

If you have a sample of the color you want, any BM dealer can color match it using a machine. They do need the sample, however. I doubt they could do it based on a verbal description. I've had pretty good success with the store on the Upper East Side.

As Mopar said, any BM paint dealer can do that for you:
Pintchik -- Bergen off Flatbush
Paint by George -- McDonald Ave
Jack Loconsolo/The Paint Store -- Coney Island Ave
We've dealt with all the above numerous times. They're all good.

Mopar, thanks. The problem/issue is that while I like the color on the paint card, and it even seems to match the color in the photo I used to originally discover the color, it looks/feels too bright when I painted a 1' x 1' square on one of my walls. At times I feel I am going mad.

BrooklynCouch: Colors ALWAYS look different in context, ALWAYS look different covering larger areas than smaller areas, and ALWAYS look different in the particular light and illumination your home gets or doesn't get. Pay the dealer to borrow his fan deck, take it home, and find a color or colors you think you like. Buy a sample and put it on the wall. Except in rare circumstances, no amount of talking, thinking, or magazine-clipping will find you the right color—they will only aim you in the right direction. Unless you have a lot of experience (and even then) you need to see it in context. A 1'x1' square, surrounded by/next to who knows what other color, will not necessarily give you an accurate picture.
