Metal apartment door scrapes
Our apartment door (metal firedoor) scrapes along the bottom when opened. There's no obvious issue with the hinges. Looks like it just wasn't cut to the right size. Any suggestions for somebody who can fix this?
Thanks.

I am no metal worker or carpenter, but the first thing I'd check is to see if the screws holding the hinges in are lose. It is sometimes the case that the door is the right size but the settling of old buildings or the loosening of screws will pull the door out of square.
Hope this helps.

Ah sorry didn't read the 2nd sentence, (you have already examined the hinges).

Sometimes just tightening the screws on the hinges raises the door up slightly

Metal door with 3 self closing hinges? Check to see if the hinges center rod and the two end caps are tight and in the proper position. Check the door strike wear marks? If the scratches still line up the movement may be in the building. These metal fire doors are not cut prior to installation. There is a very tiny amount of material at the bottom of the door that can be removed. You can try using a 4" grinder slid under the door to remove some of this material. Might be able to do this without removing the door. Protect the floor from the grinder's blade. One way to tell if the hinges are worn is if you close the door while using upward pressure on the door knob. If you pull up and the scratching stops you might benefit by replacing the hinges. A lock smith can fix the door if you are not up to the task.

I take care of these all the time and just did one for another Brownstoner within the past month. Take a look at my website and give me a call if you wish-
