floor finishing question
i am refinishing hardwood floors in prewar building. i want them as pale as possible. bleaching seems scary/expensive, so i'm looking for a way to finish them that won't make them darker OR at all shiny. what can i do?

The floor person will sand the stain off and then you can do natural color if you want. It shouldn't be dark unless it's a dark wood or has a patina you don't want to lose. As far as shine, you can absolutely do a matte finish. I have matte all over my house. I hate gloss!

rh, so is there poly that has "matte" finish? or is "satin" the closest? can you recommend a brand? and do you think the gloss has to go down first, to be more protective? we have stripped, and it's an ok color now....just worried that poly will darken it a little.

try Bona Traffic Waterbased Floor Finish. came highly recommended to me by a very skilled floor guy that my family uses. not only does it not color the floors it is less toxic and the floor won't yellow over time like a traditional polyeurathane.

Use water-based matte clear polyurethane. It won't give you a bleached look but it will be close. I think it's hideous.

To achieve a pale finish you have no option but to bleach the floor. Use two components A and B, one gallon of each will run a long way, then use a high traffic water based matte finish poly (we recommend Bona X Pacific Strong Waterborne Wood Floor Finish). Make sure to use a sponge mop and go evenly along the wood grain.

thanks so much, carlos. i would like to bleach the floors, but we are working with the contractor of the co-op and he's never done it. we don't have to pay for all the rest of the refinishing/repairing of the floors...do you know what it would cost to have someone come in for just the bleaching phase? the apt is 1000 sq ft. minus the kitchen and bathroom. also, how many coats of sealer and poly do you recommend with the products you recommend?

Hi Susanna,
I recommend 1 coat of bleach, 1 coat of primer sealer (brand mentioned in previous post), 3 coats of a Water-based Wood Floor Finish. My recommendation again is the Bona X. From my years of experience it's the best on the market - used strictly by professionals in the business.
