Crappy falling window

Hi y'all. Did a search on the board and online but can't see an answer to address this hopefully simple problem. We have those typical, kind of ugly, vinyl windows. The top one recently started sliding down. To keep it up and closed, I have to use the window lock of the bottom part of the window to physically bolster it. When I unlock the window, the top part falls, guillotine-style down, so you need to be careful about sticking your head out, a la Marie Antoinette! Anyone know what causes this or what kind of hardware I need to get to fix this? Hope I don't need a new window. Thanks loads and sorry for the boring post. Cheers, MK

You just need a new spring balance.

Both lifters are shot. Or actually completely separated. Depending on the brand Park Slope Glass makes their living repairing cheap reno windows all day. The hard part is getting them to show up. It takes a special tool to install the things.

If you are handy (and possibly a bit masochistic), you can buy the tool and the parts for a small fraction of the cost to have someone come out and repair them.

I got fed up when after spending loads of $$$ each time a window broke, the service told me they no longer worked evenings or weekends - meaning also loosing time from work.

The parts are available from LWP Lucky Window Products Inc - www.lwphomepro.com - and they are very helpful.

You may not even need a new spring balance, just some tightening. I have the tool and I do these all the time.

Thanks for all the comments! It helped me find a guide from Jeld-Wen online that explains the process. I will try to fix it myself. Steve, I may give you a call if I need some help. :)
