Armory at Bedford and Union Sts?
What is the huge old building--it looks like a former armory--on Bedford and Union Sts in Crown Heights currently used for? Anyone know its history? I will be moving right around the corner from this and am very curious.

There is a men's homelesss shelter there. I think it houses about 350 persons per day. Last year the City had wanted to move the mens't homeless shelter at Belleview there, too. I don't know the current status.
You should ask neighbors about robberies realated to proximity to the center. We have a building near there that was broken into fairly frequently in the recent past. There haven't been any robberies there recently but there were a lot of break ins in the past thta the building's occupants attributed to proximity to the shelter.

You're thinking of the Armory further down Bedford. The one at Union is currently being used to shoot a VERY large movie, I think for Disney.

I know about the Bedford-Atlantic Armory homeless shelter controversy, but I had not heard that the armory on Union and Bedford also was a shelter. I heard the rumor that it was used to shoot movies, Bunkerlabs suggests.

I think there is also a shelter in the Union/Bedford Armory, but it is not as big or badly run as Bedford Atlantic.
This is a huge, amazing building. If you are interested, there are quite a few old photographs and postcards of the Armory in the Brooklyn Library's photo archives. Here's one of them:
