where to put security cams
I want to place a few security cameras on the front of my house. Here is where I want to put them. (Sorry, this is my first sketchup so it is a bit rough.)
#1 will cover the left side of the house and the basement windows.
#2 will cover stoop and the entry to the basement
#3 will be placed behind the front door and will look at the face of the person, who opens the front door.
I still do not like the placement of #2 because it will show the backs of the people who come in not their faces.
Do you have any other suggestions where to put it. Should I put a camera under the stoop as well?

you should have 10-15 cameras as a minimum. that way you can carpet the front and you will be sure to get the identification of all people who come near your house. you never know when you will need to bust them.

My first thought was to post a snarky response--perhaps a question about whether the cameras would automatically activate the machine guns, However, since "bobjohn" posts serious questions, and I appreciate the link he provided to Lowes coupons, I'll just write that IMO security cameras are not usually needed.

If you are having genuine problems with your property (vandalism, etc) then I'd say your camera placement is fine, but it might be worth having professionals install them, that'll get your sight lines set up, cameras secured, etc
If you are thinking of being pre-emptive, do you think they are a necessity? If you really want to do it and you buy those 3-5 camera wireless web-streaming packages they sell at places like Costco don't be surprised when they don't work well and crap out after the first sign of precipitation.
Either don't do it and call 311/911 when needed, or spend the money to have it professionally done.

I guess, I better do not ask the follow up question about trap door and the dungeon under the stoop. :)
thanks for unison answers.

I don't know, if I saw 3 security cameras on a private residence on my street, I'd think the owner was a paranoid who's stocking guns while waiting for the Armageddon. Or has a meth lab on the premises. Just a thought.

I am loving the sketchup - Bravo!
I personally like the idea of the security cameras and agree if you are going to do it - do it right with a professional.
Question - do you have to post that you are using security cameras? I seen the warnings in taxis and some other buildings. Wondering if that applies to residential areas?

Other than a major crime as in rape or murder the cops won't be interested in reviewing your tapes. I manage a 40 unit condo in the north slope with a state of the art security system. They have literally hours of cds over the last 10 years of everything from people not cleaning up after their dogs, kids urinating in the bushes out front and people defecating in the lobby and the top of the fire escape (you have to see it to believe it). The cops were completely uninterested in pursuing any of these crimes. I think the people who you need worry about are the same people who don't give a shit, figuratively speaking anyway, about your piss ant cameras and warning signs.

I got the same kind of answers when I asked about security locks. The only person who was helpful was Bklyn Fire Alarm Guy.
I think your placement looks fine. I used Supreme Security for my cameras and locks. They are great.

These days I live in an apartment building on a very nice street in Brooklyn Heights with a camera outside that you can hardly see so it's not their to deter anyone. Anyway, cops have asked us for footage a couple of times a year for the last couple of years. I think it's not all bad to have them.
And don't listen to mod squad about hundreds of hours of crap. These days, it's all digital and records over the old footage as often as you program it. I think ours holds 24 hours and then loops over again.
Also, I really like the camera near the door so you can visually confirm it's the UPS dude before you open the door.

Excuse me Mr. Ringo, The system I was talking about can store on the hard drive 30 to 60 days before it "loops over again", whatever the hell "loop" means. That dedicated computer hard drive has what I believe people in the business call a CD/DVD burner. I understand you can put a plastic disc in it and it "records" said 30 to 60 days worth of defecating for future viewing and enjoyment.

sorry mod squad, didn't realize people were burning CDs of this these days. not with your state of the art equipment. why on earth would you do that?

If you're just looking to confirm visitors before you let them in, get one of those buzzers with a built-in cam that activates when people buzz. That way you get a nice closeup of their face.
