mouse extermination (follow up)
This is a follow up to my post the other day about mice in my Clinton Hill home...
Well I took several people's advice and bought a "Ratzapper", which was a highly satisfying use of 50 bucks. I killed three mice in the first two nights of use and haven't seen one since.
Now this isn't to say I am not going to do the long term solution thing and plug all the wholes with steel wool etc, but if eradicating mice is the game its hard to imagine a more efficiently death-dealing device. Highly recommended.

they just crawled right in? they seem to avoid all of the sticky and snap traps that i set with all types of bait. if this worked that well. i am going to order one today!

I will order one too. Thanks wasder. Maybe we can all bring some of our "kill" to display at the next party. LOL

bkny--yep they just crawled right on in and were instantaneously zapped (one at a time--you have to empty between kills). I had struggled with glue traps for days and days and only gotten one measly mouse and then the Ratzapper killed one per night for three nights and I haven't seen any in a few days.
DIBS--mine would smell pretty bad by that point!

I love Zapper. We had a huge problem and with help of exterminator, covering all visible points of entry and Zapper - no problem for a year. We do have a yearly contract with exterminator and he comes every month to check bait stations( used to be monthly and now every 3 months). We still have Zappers on if mouse decides to show up. The best $50 per piece ever spent.

Good to know the Rat Zapper works on mice. I got one for rats, placed it under my front stoop for a couple of months, and nothing, even though that spot was part of the neighborhood rats' nightly jaunts. I've read that mice are far less cautious than rats.

Evidently ;)
I dealt with some rats in our backyard last summer with quick use of poison. They avoided the traps I set, but the poison was all taken within a day and I collected a few dead rodents a day or two later.

Wow, I'm getting mine too. Thanks wasder.

Welcome to the club, wasder! I'm glad you have had the same results we had with the zapper! there's a funny comment on ratzappers.com in their testimonials stating that an army of ghost mice is awaiting the inventors of the Rat Zapper, and I fear it's true!

The Ratzapper instructions state that it is harder to catch rats than mice in the device because rats are much more cautious and it includes directions for how to entice the rats in. Thankfully we have only had the little field mice in our house.

I've been using the Ratzapper for almost two years and I tell you that thing is great. It worked the first night catching two mice within minutes of each other and caught 2 additional mice within the week. No major problems since. I keep the trap on at all times. The mice that manage to get in are caught before I even sense that one is in the house now. I also placed one in the back yard where I have seen a rat or two. I put the trap inside of a box with a garbage bag over it and put a trail of dry dog food on the ground leading into the trap. Caught a fat one within two days and a smaller rat about two days later.
The classic model works very good and priced at $40. No need to spend $55 for the ultra model.

Thanks for taking the time to let us all know how well this has worked for you. I'm in but have one question for anyone with kids...in a house with a curious and active 15 month old, I'm assuming I have to turn this off and put it away when the baby is awake, right?

I certainly would not leave this anywhere a 15 month old baby could get at it. While I don't believe the level of electric shock would be able to do great harm to a toddler I sure wouldn't want to find out! We only put ours out after we go to bed, which is when the mice are active anyway. A little one might be able to reach into the device and touch the electrical plate and at the very least get a terrific scare.

I agree that you should not keep it out around small children. Perhaps you can put it behind furniture/ appliances or somewhere they won't be able to get to it.
