Junk menus, ads on the stoop
I get junk menus and Kohl's ads on my stoop. I sweat in front of everybody, that I will never buy from any of the shops, which advertise though unsolicited materials on my front steps. I disconnected from Verison land line after I got three yellow pages.
But still, I want to excersise more creative ways to stop junk papers.
Do you have any good suggestions?
Should I simply put "no menus" sign?

The sign works, I have it on my gate.

You can download a "No Flyers, Ads, Menus" sign from this site: http://parkslopeciviccouncil.org/signs which also lists several stores when they can be found in printed form. I recognize the waste and excess, which would be great to curtail. On the flip side, I like to scan the supermarket, Lowe's and HD circulars. New tenants are usually grateful to receive menus, phone books, etc. to help familiarize them with the neighborhood. Shredded newspaper can be added to your compost: http://www.css.cornell.edu/compost/faq.html#newspaper

vinca,
thanks for the link. About the scaning ads. This post-internet revolution society. You can find great deals on slickdeals.net. You can find lowest prices on pricegrabber.com and you can find any phone/address on the maps.google.com
Few weeks ago my 3rd grader son came home and told, that he made school project in PowerPoint. He also inserted pictures, which he found and dounloaded from the google images. Dem, we are getting old!!!

Thanks for the links. My industry has relied on computers since the 60s, but I can't ever remember carrying a laptop, let alone a desktop, to shop for groceries. I prefer printed matter, and detest being forced to read print media online. I am definitely aged in that regard.

Agreed, the sign on the gate is not that attractive, but I much prefer it over having to take circulars inside and recycle all the time, or seeing them blow around my block or seeing them stuffed in my fence.....to me the sign is the far lesser of 2 evils.

There is a distribution office telephone number on the plastic bag that contains the circulars. Call the number and tell them that you don't want the circulars. I called twice to no avail but I finally got through to some guy who said that he was the Vice-President of the company. He apologized on behalf of his employees said that he would take care of it. He did and followed up with a phone call. I never got another circular again. I would ask for the Manager/Vice-President from the onset and leave a number where he can call you back.

Just throw them in the garbage and never shop from any of those stored advertised. But be considerate for the guy printing and delivering them. Those are American jobs.
