How to secure an open window?
I'd like to be able to leave my garden level windows open a few inches for air while I'm out of the house (or at night) and not worry about them being opened further from the outside. I've been wondering if there's a product or some way to secure them on the inside so they're several inches open. The windows are old and don't have that newer security feature that pops out to prevent the window from being opened all the way. New windows aren't an option at this point unfortunately. If anyone has any ideas or tricks please let me know.

Wouldn't something as simple as a peg in a hole in the upper frame do this?
I've also seen it done with a length of wood mounted vertically.
Those are the free solutions. If you have the budget most hardware stores will sell a little brass thing that you can screw in. Costs about $2.79. Can't find a link at the moment. Installed for my mom in her wood frame windows last year. Works great, looks fine.
Here's another product with a different approach.

a screw threw the lower and into upper sash while the window is open is one way. or you can use something like this...

Drilling a hole and adding a nail is a solution. There are also locks made for this puropose.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.

A piece of wood, like the rod you hang your clothes from in your closet, cut to the length you want. Placed either vertically in the window track, or horizontally across the upper window (more visually obvious).
Minimal cost, works pretty well.
