sink strainer basket 2-1/2" size
i have an old sink with one of those tiny drain openings. i need to replace the drain basket but i can't find any in stock anywhere. home depot claims to have it on their web site but there is no evidence of it in the store. i checked a couple of mom & pop stores but they didn't have them either. i need the whole basket assembly, not just the removable cup thingy.
Since a lot of people here have old sinks (ie, enamel on steel) i figure somebody out there must have experience with this. is there anywhere in town to get this part or do i have to order online?

Try Home Depot first. If they don't have it, go to Quetzel plumbing supply on gates and lewis avenue (double check the cross streets). I found a sink drain there for $8, for which Home Depot wanted $30.

There are some really beautiful designs out there. For something different check the Remodelista blog.
This is a link to a cool one:

Garber Hardware on Greenwich Street (10th and Charles) in Manhattan totally has that -- and everything else you could possibly need. That's a mom and pop store worth having on your regular route!

Garber is on the Lexington line...that is, after a quick change for the L at 14th.

What you show in the picture is called a bar sink strainer.

MP, i saw a bunch of different names for it, including bar sink, but also "junior" and such. i went down to the store (okay it wasn't that big a hike) and (sorry, I didn't get the guy's name!) he showed me a variety of small drain baskets. i picked a basic model and installed it no problem! i got a few other supplies and hooked everything up; it all works perfectly. this pretty much makes this store awesome in my book. i am so glad to have my kitchen sink back! thanks, Garber guy!

You will never find old plumbing parts at Home Depot. You have to go to an old hardware store that specializes in such things. I am sure they are all over, but there is one in particular in Queens on Roosevelt Ave around 132nd or so. They have the strangest hours. If they don't have it, they will make it, and if you don't want them to make it, they will suggest all kinds of workarounds.

Well, you don't need it now, but I found the Queens resource:
Alfano Plumbing at 104-78 Roosevelt Ave. Has most original parts for old buildings in Queens.

thanks mopar! we should build a list of the best hardware stores for hard-to-find items. it's so true, only these small, old-timey places seem to know what to keep in stock for our ancient, crumbly houses. but i had gone to a couple small hardware stores and they didn't have these drain basket thing so i started getting paranoid!

Did you try Pintchik on Flatbush? They have a secret plumbing section in the basement.
