Prospect Heights
Hi... I am going to look at a house in prospect heights btw carlton and vanderbilt ave. I have been looking at houses in ps,cg,ch,bh I am familiar with these areas but not prospect heights. I was hoping on getting some feed back on this neighborhood. Also if there are good schools here. I do not know anything about this area so all information would be appreciated

I wouldn't move there. Not a great place for a family, if that's waht you're looking for.
Too dangerous for my taste.

I live in prospect heights between carlton and vanderbilt and think its a great location. We are close to trains (B,Q,2,3), close to the park and have restaurants, bars, grocery stores, cleaners, banks and even BAM...all within easy walking distance. We have teen and up aged children but I see plenty of younger kids around. I try to be aware of my surroundings wherever I go but have not felt unsafe in this area....karo25's comments really surprised me.

We moved to Prospect Heights from Park Slope recently (with a 2-yr-old). The primary motivation was more space, but we also really like the friendly, neighborhood vibe here. Vanderbilt has good restaurants and amenities, and we are only a couple blocks from 7th and 5th Avenues in Park Slope. Close to the trains (23BQ), Prospect Park, the farmer's market at Grand Army Plaza, library, etc. As for schools, you should try to speak with some of the parents who have been active with PS 9.

Too dangerous between Carlton and Vanderbilt? Ridiculous! The streets closest to Grand Army (st mark's, prospect, park) are basically an extension of Park Slope. Bergen and Dean are slightly more industrial but I would not call them dangerous by any means. Maybe 10 years ago....
Per previous poster, this area has the best of both worlds with proximity to Park Slope & Vanderbilt, plus express trains....

To dangerous for a family?!! phooey! I moved to Prospect Heights with my two sons (who were 5 and 8 at the time) from north Park Slope in 2002. Just by crossing Flatbush (barely, we're between Flatbush and Carlton) I got more space, an enormous yard (which drew us to PH in the first place, the unbelievable lot sizes for houses) and the best family neighborhood I've ever lived in. Our neighbors, some of whom pioneered PH in the late 80s, arrived on our doorstep with in days of our arrival on the block with brownies, invitations for supper, etc.. My kids run around the block to visit friends behind us, ride their scooters to the store for a gallon of milk, walk to school (in Park Slope, more on schools in a sec). Having lived in Park Slope I can't see any difference in safety or crime from there. I agree with squaredrive, 10 years ago that was the case and even when we moved to PH in 2002 in felt a little less populated but things have changed drastically since then. Vanderbilt and Underhill and surrounding blocks (for better or worse, everyone has a different opinion) have exploded in terms gentrification.
My family and I are relocating to the west coast and have just sold our home in PH. I am so sad to leave that neighborhood with its strong, strong sense of community. My kids (who are now 11 and 14) had remarkable freedom. They'd walk to the movies (BAM), to roma's on flatbush, to friends' houses. It's a great, great neighborhood and not any different safetywise from the streets on the 'other' side of Flatbush. Be wise. Be careful. But it's a wonderful place to live.
As I mentioned, my kids went to school in Park Slope. There is a public school on Underhill that I don't know much about but have heard there are parents in the neighborhood working to make it great. All of the people on our block with kids (and there are a ton) send their kids to a mix of public/private in Park Slope/Boerum Hill.
I can't put you in touch with lots of people (including the young couple with two kids who just bought our home) who live in PH and will be happy to talk to you.

I live off of carlton ave and it is a great area all around. Great subway access, 10-15 min walk to the park, and walking distance to park slope and fort greene when you want to get into that. Plenty of good retail and restaurants on vanderbilt and flatbush also. The streets are quiet and charming, especially around prospect place and st. marks. the area down by atlantic yards (pacific st) surely has a shady vibe to it, but its not like you are and your family are going to hang out there in the evenings.
Its definitely not as ritsy as PS or BH but I believe its probably one of the better priced areas in the NYC area for what you get, given its proximity to downtown manhattan and nearby ammenities.
