Montauk Club observation
This may have already been covered -- under code enforcement or quality of life?? The empty lot next to the Montauk Club on Plaza Street next to the Grand Army Plaza subway entrance is kind of an eyesore. Does anyone know if the MC still owns it? If so, any plans to build on it or re-landscape? I notice the beautiful fence around the Club (which also surrounds the empty lot) is in obvious disrepair... some sections are falling down and the Club has tied chains around it. I would imagine the fence has been landmarked - or some equivalent - which makes its condition all the more upsetting. Can anyone shed any light?

The club does not even own the club itself any more.

Focus on your own property... and make a large donation to the Montauk Club to work on their "eyesore." Jeez.

The Montauk Club Condo'd off a portion of the club and has a fraction of what it was. The lot next door is actually owned by a third party, and they have not done anything with that lot. I believe that they have tried to in the past, but the Community Board wouldn't allow anything. Out of MC's hands.

Shhhh. The lot is not as ugly as a big building would be. I'm right across the street. As for the fence, I don't know.
The Club was bought maybe 10-12 years ago, as was the lot where the paddleball courts used to be. I remember when the working girls who were at the current Blockbuster spot used to take their dates under the platform. Anyway, this guy Ralph bought the whole thing for a million dollars, built out the apartments, got into a fight with the club folks and moved their kitchen in the middle of the night (they rented from him), never got a c of o and bankrupted the project. The ground floor and the lot were auctioned off. The owners of the lot tried to get an approximately 12 story building approved. It was shot down. That is the story as I know it. I could be wrong.
I guess that would make the fence the responsibility of the lot owner.
Several of the fence posts and the bullet glass windows were removed by Ralph.
