looking for contractor-recommend
We are purchasing a four family brownstone in Brooklyn and will convert two units into a duplex. We are looking for recommendations of good/reasonable contractors - based on personal experience.

My experience with Lino's was him and his son were way overpriced. In addition to giving me a hard time while they were in my apartment for the estimate. They would only provide references if I signed a contract and gave them a deposit first which is really a dumb ass thing to do!
Now about the Alberta Chica subject. He made an appointment with me and never showed up or called.
The one I will recommend is Freddy. He has all his paperwork in order (license, insurance, etc.). You name it he's got it. All verifiable. He has combined several apartments. His references are good. His prices are reasonable.

I can recommend an expediter to get your application through the department of buildings. Your going to need to ammend the Certificate of Occupancy (no easy feat). I have been dealing with the city agencies for 20 years and i highly recommend myself.
I always recommend that the owner hire the expediter directly rather than allow the architect to include expediting in his fee. This way you actually know what the delay is, you directly control the process, and theres no mark-up.

Before I hired them I made sure I saw at least one current job site and 3 previous projects similar to mine. They had excellent references and best of all their estimate was line itemized. The other companies I was considering didn't even come close to how detailed AllRenovation was during the bidding process. I highly recommend them, ask for Pietro - he's the owner and he managed my project.

Try Gus Almiroudis at Zoom Contracting (718) 626-7979, or Mike Zych at Zych Construction (718) 417-3100. Both do good quality work, and their pricing is very reasonable.
I've worked w/ Zoom many times, always w/ good results. They just finished a brownstone renovation on 8th Street in P. Slope.
Zych is about 75% of the way through gutting the top floor, and adding a new floor, on a 13th Street brownstone, and has done a very good job to date.

I am just completing a three-month renovation of a Cobble Hill brownstone. The work included digging the cellar framing, plaster work, fairly extensive plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, painting, kitchen renovation and all sorts of other small and large jobs.
I used Tim Curran as a manager 917 450 8230. He handled all the fees, permits, architects and managed the contractor JCL Construction.
I can not say enough good things about Tim and James, the owner of JCL. They were absolutely always professional always hardworking and equally importantly, always available. I spoke to them on the weekends and at night and could not be happier with their work, attitude and price. Give him a call.

I am an architect, specializing in sustainable design, and I've done a number of brownstone renovations in Park Slope and the Upper East side. I can highly recommend at least one contractor with whom I work over and over again. His name is Ronald Baker of RHB Design Build. He's a great guy to work with. I have worked with J Thomas Construction based in Brooklyn. My experience with them was nothing less than amazing - efficient, reliable, dedicated and the best customer service I've received.
