Ipe decks in winter

A contractor told me that ipe isn't nearly as durable as people think it when used in snowy/icy climates. Is it worthwhile to cover an ipe deck with a tarp during winter to protect it from snow and ice?

I do not know how durable people "think it" is but it is more or less as hard a as steel and will not splinter - I would not cover it - besides being a little late now, you could get mold growing on it.
It will turn grayish after a winter or two - but all you have to do is use some Penefin Oil and the color will be preserved - & retreat to bring natural color back.

I installed an ipe deck and it's on it's third winter with absolutely no splintering, checking, or twisting. I didn't treat it and so it has mellowed to a nice gray.
