How to fix a loud fridge fan?
Currently I have tenants complaining the refrigerator in their apartment has a fan that is too loud. It's an old, used no-name fridge probably from ten years or so ago, but works fine otherwise. I don't have the slightest idea who to call or how to service it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The first place I'd think to look would be "appliance repair"

A service call will likely cost you $100-$200, including time and parts. Lots of perfectly good, new refrigerators for a tenant's apartment can be found in the $500 range AND they'll work better, more efficiently and reduce the tenant's electric bill. I'm not dismissing the difference in cost, just suggesting that after 10 years it might be worth considering whether time for a new appliance.

You could also try cleaning it. Sometimes it's just gunked up.

This is a test to see how far they can push you. But, vinca is right, getting someone to service an old one isn't worth the hassle. You can get a new one for $500 or even less depending upon how big it is.

I was a renter and had this problem. I unplugged the fridge at night.
But I would think if you could somehow take the back off and oil the fan, maybe the problem would be solved.

Mind you, the bedroom was next to the kitchen. Also, in one previous apt, the fan got really loud before the compressor conked out, so it could be a warning sign something needs servicing.

It's not just about the cost-benefit analysis of having someone service it for $200 v. a new refrigerator for $500.
A ten-year old refrigerator is also using a lot of electricity. Just spend the $500 or $600 to buy a newer, more efficient one, and you've done the Planet a solid.
LG has a great counter-depth 10cuft refrigerator that's great for apartments for about this price, it's very efficient.
