help: venue needed, party of 125

off topic, i know, but can anyone help? looking for a space, preferably in brooklyn, to have a party with 125 seated, room for music-playing and dancing, where we're not forced to use somebody's overpriced caterers. preferably a non-swanky place, but cool. example of the preferred aesthetic is bargemusic, but it's way too small. already ruled out Galapagos ($18,000 for a night!), SmackMellon, Waterfront museum, Powerhouse, Boathouse, Picnic House, Friends Meeting House (so many houses!), etc. Help! Event is supposed to be April 4th.

Since you seem to have been looking in Dumbo, did you look into ReBar, the upstairs at Bubby's or Superfine?

Blau Ganz in Tribeca rents out their restaurant occasionally for parties and it's a really nice venue.

I can't think of any spaces that swank for rent in Brooklyn.

I assume you don't want a Bayridge banquet hall, right?

Bubby's is actually resonable-ish, but not available when we want it. ReBar wasn't big enough, and I don't think Superfine is, either, but I will ask them. I do like it there.

Problem with Bay Ridge banquet hall is we don't want the banquet--we want to escape catering if we can, unless it is so delicious and reasonably priced that it will dissuade us from our potluck vision. Thanks both of you for your ideas. Keep 'em coming.

Some places that come to mind are Ici in Fort Greene, Northeast Kingdom in Bushwick, and Village in the West Village in Manhattan (nice loft space in back). These are all restaurants.

There are also tons more loft spaces in Bushwick in addition to the one mentioned above. Can't remember all their names. 3rd Ward, Starr Space, Bushwick Starr -- can't remember all their names. BushwickBK or Bushwick Open Studios might have some more leads.

The Brooklyn Lyceum on the corner of 4th and Union is cheap and super flexible.

The First Reformed Church in Park Slope has a huge space and their prices are very reasonable. No in house catering. Its a nicer space in the daytime because of the beautiful windows.

(The site doesn't really show it in the best light...its worth a visit)

Oh, potluck! Sorry, I didn't understand. Isn't there also some fabulous historical stone house-city park in Brooklyn that will let you bring your own stuff? (Not the boathouse.) My list is at work and I'm at home. Check the web site indiebride for threads on inexpensive places in Brooklyn to hold events.

Don't forget: Renting tables, chairs, plates, utensils, buying vases, and what not is actually equally or more expensive than catering. Unless maybe you're going with paper plates.

Also, FWIW, I've done take-out BBQ in place of both potluck and catering (for a rehearsal dinner) and everyone seemed to enjoy it. (In another city, though, so don't have a BBQ place to recommend.)

Ooooh what about that wonderful Polish hall or whatever it's called in Greenpoint? It's so cute. They have a swanky bar and a stage. Bust magazine holds crafts fairs there.

Hi all,

I started a website a few months ago that might help. There's a small number of venues on it now, but will be growing... It is www.pogby.com and it takes online event/meeting booking reservations at venues - capacity, packages, and other key descriptors are listed to assist in the search for the right place. We're based in Greenpoint and are looking to bring more venues on board in the near future. Feel free to check it out.
