Brooklyn Car Repair Recommendations

I have a great auto repair place on the south shore of Staten Island. That is a good thing and a bad thing. It turns out a need to get a tire fixed (and buy a spare). I need to do this in Brooklyn and would like to ask Brownstoners if there is a recommended place to do either/both. I suffer from a radical lack of trust in this department - love the SI guys but can't drive there for obvious reasons. Any recommendations? Thanks.

If this is simply fixing a flat, even a bad one, go to the guys under the F train on 3rd Ave. Ten minutes, honest, reliable and cheap. Never a problem with those guys in 20+ years. Not sure about buying a spare from them, though, and it certainly won't be a new spare, but once you get the tire fixed you can drive wherever you want to buy the spare.

If you belong to Costco (or similar), I recommend them for purchasing tires. If not, I recommend Sears. Though I have a great mechanic, I prefer buying tires from places where the warranty will be honored no matter where I'm traveling. When I have a flat with a puncture that needs repair, I use the guys on 3rd Ave. between 9th and 10th St. (but have the feeling that's not near you). They also sell both new and used tires.

Thanks, Vinca and Slopefarm. It might be a stretch to drive over to 3rd (it is really flat) and all the gas stations around me have broken air machines ???!!#, but the 3rd ave place is good to know about. I remembered a place on Fulton in FT greene so think I will go there for the repair, but Costco sounds like a good idea for the new tire.
Tks.

The guys I mentioned are the same as in Vinca's post.

I totally agree with slopefarm and vinca... have done business with both places... 3rd avenue under the F train will get you up and running, and Costco's is great for replacng a tire or getting all replaced...

I get 225/45/17 tires for my audi and order them from tirerack.com. They ship tires to a shop in brooklyn which will mount them. So I usually ask to ship to Major Tire on McDonad Ave. But there are a few more - check tirerack.com for the list. Overall you have good choice and price. If you need one tire - you should get matching brand to other three. Otherwise you can end up with difference in rolling diameter and grip characteristics.

Donatella, just FYI: there's a foam you can buy at most large auto supply stores that won't work as long-term repair or for long distances, but is good enough if you're stuck and need to inflate your tire before driving to get it fixed.

Thanks for the help. I wound up going to a tire repair place on Fulton near South Oxford. My tire was completely shot, dried out and unrepairable - I bought a new tire from him. They guy was very nice and prices good. I'll use that one as a spare and buy new one(s) from Costco.

Check Costco's latest coupon book: $70 off a set of four (of a particular brand). It's a big chunk of money, but if you need all four, then also a big savings.
