Rat control

A group of property owners in Cobble Hill are having a problem with rats coming into our backyards. We're looking for advice about the best method of rat elimination, especially do-it-yourself methods. Snap traps, glue traps, bait stations--what works best outside? We'd like to hear from other home owners who have experienced this problem (not from professional exterminators).

Comments

Poison in their holes, keep kids and pets away until it's over, close up any holes/loose masonry/etc. that can serve as habitat.

Had a horrible infestation a couple of years back, and nothing (snap traps, bait stations etc.) made a dent until we went nuclear. Since then, knock wood, all's well.

the rat zapper! I read postings raving about it on this forum, had a mouse issue that no traps were solving and did not want poison as we have dogs. Got the rat zapper, set it up and within 20 minutes! caught the mouse! so far, no others but I suspect that there are more, so the zapper lies in wait. the best money i've spent on extermination! and you can use them outside! whoever posted the reco for this earlier, i thank you profusely.

THey are there because there is a food source. Finding out what that is is 1st step. (do you share backyards with restaurants, food stores, etc? if so get on their case and call community board.) Does anyone have fruit tree with fallen fruit on ground?
We had big problem this summer - in collaboration many neighbors used bait, poison and regular spring traps.
Seems to be gone for now.
Also check your yards for burrowing/nesting.
Curious to know which block....often caused by new construction digging.
