moving a pendant light
The Large pendant light over my dining table is not centered. I would like to move it about 1 foot ( moving the table is not an option) from the current electric box from which it hangs. My preference is not to move the box, but the lamp hangs on a pole that is secured by the cup that attaches to the light box. Any suggestions or recommendations for a good/reasonably priced electrician?

Hmmm. You may have to move the box to the next joist or along the existing one. Another possibility might be adding a bracket between joists and suspending the lamp from that. I'm guessing it will cost several hundred dollars.
Either way, I think, you'll have to open up the ceiling, and I've found that no matter how careful the patch and repainting, it won't be pristine any more.
Could you live with it and just move the table for parties etc.?

I've seen lights where they have a chain and it loops over to a hook. Thus, you could leave it plugged in as is, put a hook where you want it to dangle from and then hook up the chain to the hook so it drops from there. Of course this involves replacing the post/whatever it hangs from with a chain, but I think that would look fine.

Can you post a photo showing how it is attached to the ceiling? How big the plate is, etc. It'll help people in accessing it properly.

while you're moving it, may i suggest that you also lower it? pendant lamps above a dining table look best 30" - 36" up from the table. you'll show the lamp to maximum effect at a lower height.

Unless light is quite heavy, you can skip chain, use fat round plastic wire and loop over a hook placed where you want the light to hang.

How about installing a small piece of track and sliding the fixture over. You wouldn't need to move the box or anything.

thanks all for your great suggestions. I think I am either going with a large plate that will allow me to cover the original light box and also give me some lateral movement, or the traditional hook/loop with a new chain. The light is quite heavy ( 25 lbs) so I will probably install the hook into the joist.
carolgardens- I thought about lowering the light and hanging it in a more traditional manner, however, it then obstructs the view from the kitchen through the rest of the apartment and would block some of the light that we get from our yard.
does anyone have a reference for some non traditional material for hanging pendants ( i'm think possibly of rope or plastic tubing for the wires and an industrial metal hook for the ceiling, etc......??
