hoist/crane hire?
we've come across a snag, turns out our marble kitchen counter is too big (just) to fit up the stairs to the 3rd floor.
Apart from cutting it in half right down the middle (which seems like the most likely option), I'd like to know if anyone has ever hired a crane/hoist before and how much an hour these things cost.
I'll be hitting the internet tomorrow but if you have some reccomendations now is the time to through them out there.
The counter weighs about 1050 pounds and needs to go 40' to the roof (fits real easy down one flight to the 3rd floor and in the front door).

Since you seem to be doing a lot of work, are you expecting any sheetrock deliveries to the upper floors that would go thru a window? Often a small gratuity to the hoist operator will get it done.

nope they carried it up the stairs - front windows are too small.
lol 4 stories will require a permit, road blockage, serious boom reach etc etc.
Not something i'm going to get away with for a case of beer :)
The only quote I got so far is $1850.....means we are going to find an alternative solution to our problem unless this was a highball price and it's a drastically lower problem.

Have you asked at the tool rental place on 3rd Av.at around 13th St? They probably could recommend operators.

It's worth a try contacting movers. If any window is big enough, we used to hoist by hand (pulleys)pianos, dressers etc.
I'm talking 40 years ago but maybe??

Tri-Star Building Supply near the Manhattan Bridge has a lift and you can hire them. I rec'd them to a friend who needed to get a heavy cast iron bathtub upstairs. I don't know how much it will cost but my guess is $400 max, and probably much less. I just found their info below:
