contractor recommendation?

I want to change my awkward u-shaped kitchen back to the original galley layout, but I'm having a hell of a time finding a contractor. My hope is to be able to accomplish this for no more than $30K. (It's an 8x10 kitchen and no plumbing needs to move.) Does this seem possible? Any contractor recommendations?

Comments

Yes it is possible (all depends on the cost of the fixtures you plan on placing in the kitchen, this should be more than sufficient). I can send you a few pics of our past work, simply send me an email at the addy provided below. I am a general contractor (licensed and insured, references provided upon request). You can contact either myself or my partner at the number below to schedule a free estimate. Looking forward to speaking with you. Happy Holidays.

Sincerely

Go to the Chinese area of Sunset Park or Flushing and look around for Chinese contractors. Many of them drive vans with their numbers painted on the sides.

Those guys usually do good work and their prices are cheap.

I'm completely serious, by the way. I've never heard of anybody having problems with Chinese contractors in NYC and their prices are usually good.

Irish guys can be good too, but they start out quoting high prices, and you have to negotiate like a back alley shyster to get them to come down. But they hate losing potential work, and usually if you press them hard enough, they'll fold.

By the way, as long as you get mid-level cabinets, there's no reason you can't get that kitchen done under budget, especially since you're not moving any plumbing.

Personally, I'd consider using a neutral colored Ceaserstone over granite or another natural rock because it never stains or scratches and is uniform in color, even though it's more expensive. If you go with Corian, go light because the darker colors show every scratch.

Also, I'd go with stained wood cabinets instead of painted ones so you don't have to repaint them in the future.

Just my two cents. . .

IB, I'm waiting for my Chinese Ceaserstone counter installer to come back and remove and re-cut the piece that is 3/4" off on the long side and 3/8" off on the short side. Some of the other pieces are not square either, but they're not so noticeable.

Of course I don't know whether I should blame this on the Jewish owner of Brooklyn Kitchens whom I bought it from, the Chinese owner of the company who cut it, or the Puerto Rican installer :-)

I found transcend construction through referrals in the forum and they were able to perform magic for us (all for under 30k). The did a similar sized kitchen, bath, and more and all the work was done beautifully. The contact there is Nick (3479335875 and 3474071816). Please say Heidi referred you, I plan to use them again in the spring.

I second the rec for Nick at Transcend. We used him primarily for a masonry job, but I REALLY wish I'd used him for our huge interior reno (but we didn't meet him until that was under way). He has subsequently handled a number of small jobs for us, always with excellent results. He actually comes to the job before, during and after, even if it's small (unlike everyone else we've used for everything, where if the job seems small they sometimes just send over their "guys".) See details about our experience (w/ Transcend, as well as basic "wish-I'd-known/did differently" points here: http://www.brownstoner.com/forum/archives/2008/12/our_recent_expe.php

Tell him Cammie referred you.
