I don't remember the exact name (Kazmak?) but the place on the corner of Windsor and 7th Ave did great custom blinds for us.

I have used Smith & Noble twice, but it's neither all that cheap nor easy to install. They will measure if you don't want to do it yourself. The first time I had no choice, since my windows were very unusual dimensions. But the second time, I wish I had just ordered shades from Target online instead. About $300 per shade for a typical Brownstone type window.

Pinchik cuts shades to order and is pretty inexpensive. I don't know if they do installations (and it's a pretty simple DIY job) but it's worth asking.

we used smith & noble for all of our windows. they are pricey - however, 2 years later a shade string broke, completely my fault, and they replaced the shade for free, no questions asked. i was so relieved b/c it was a set of 3 and would absolutely have to be replaced with the exact same materials. good example of getting what you paid for.

I'm going to The Shade Store in Soho. I checked prices compared to Smith and Noble and a couple of others and they were competetive. I like that I can actually go look at the samples - I find Smith and Noble website really cumbersome. http://www.theshadestore.com/

Heartily recommend Pinchik; have done great work on custom shades and they stand behind the product.

I ordered six shades from Smith & Noble a year and a half ago and would not use them again. They sent me the wrong items several times and customer service was terrible. They sent the wrong length roman shades (their error) and insisted that I return the shades to them as proof that they sent the wrong size. I was happy to return them but they would only pay for the return via a UPS pickup. Without a doorman this was impossible without my staying home from work to meet the UPS guy, which I was not willing to do since it was their error, and I was not willing to pay to ship them back. In addition, they sent the wrong brackets for a roller shade in the same order--twice! All of this took several weeks (6? I don't remember exactly) and their customer service was extremely rude once there was a problem (had been helpful during ordering). I was really shocked by the number of screw-ups and the response.

Oops, I mean a typical brownstone type window shade is $150 each, not $300. (That was the whole order for two.) Using the most inexpensive materials. I have found their customer service to be beyond polite, but they did get one shade wrong.
