prospect heights/crown heights
I'm looking at a co op at Washington ave and Crown st. Next to the Botanical gardens. (Prospect Heights/Crown Heights) Does anyone have any feedback on the area. It seems very quiet at night.

It is quiet at night, nice area. Sometimes there are kids that engage in some tom foolery; but all in all good area, with upside

I live a few blocks from there on Eastern Parkway.
Washington next to the Botanic gardens is very very quiet at night. Walking on Washington is generally safe at night, but the part of Franklin that is between Crown and Sullivan is dead quiet, and I would avoid it at night.
I believe that there is a police station right near you on Carroll and Franklin.
Franklin is getting more business and young white hipsters, but mostly on the other side of Eastern Parkway.
Nearby are some big landmarks.
Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, once stood at Bedford and Sullivan. It was torn down and a huge housing complex sits there now.
Medgar Evers college campus is near Bedford.
The Botanic Gardens is great, and there is an entrance right near Crown.
Overall, I think it is a good area, with access to the subways and the museum and the park and the botanic gardens. Restaurants are a little slim where you are, but you can walk over to Washington on the other side of E. Parkway, to Franklin near Eastern Parkway, or down to Flatbush.
I know someone is going to respond to this post and bash the area as a crips/bloods dispute zone or something like that, so be prepared for that. Probably good to have a balance of perspectives.

This is 100% crown heights and in no way prospect heights. That should be reflected in the price. CH costs less than PH. Don't let a real estate agent try and tell you otherwise. Compare it to other CH properties in price.
Those apt buildings across from the garden always looked intriguing to me. If you could get a garden view and know nobody would ever build in the way of it, that would be lovely. What's the place like inside?
If I remember correctly I saw on the news in the last year that a woman was murdered by someone breaking into one of those places. It was a case of stranger violence, not someone she knew. There are such cases in many areas that cost plenty. I'd still want to know.

You nuts are going to someone killed! I love when some Asshat tell you "this neighborhood is safe" because he/she need a bigger influx of Dumbasses. Just rent for a while and see if you like the neighborhood. A few months will not kill you and this will help you make a better decision.

I live in Bay Ridge, known for its "quiet and safe" streets. Two weeks ago I had police helicopters hovering over my block (75th Street and Ridge Blvd) for an hour. I called NY1 News to report it and they told me the police were looking for a burglar. Last week, I read in the Police Blotter of the local paper that two men pulled off a home invasion, bound and gagged the 2 women at home with duct tape, robbed them and fled after a while without harming them futher. (Thank God!). I suppose that is who the helicopters were looking for.
So yes, plenty of neighborhoods are quiet and safe, but anything can happen, anywhere. There are often murders, muggings, rapes and stabbings in every neighborhood of NY. I suggest you pick up a local newspaper and check the Police Blotter for a few weeks.
