NYC Police and Fire Fighters Next to Feel Budget Pinch
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=6181983&page=1
With Wall Street revenue dropping and no easy alternatives at hand New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg tomorrow is expected to announce that in order to close a $4 billion budget gap the city is cancelling the police academy January 2009 class, cutting 500 jobs in parks and education, cutting back nighttime operations at five firehouses and reducing firefighter training, ABC News has learned.
The 70's are back! Woo-Hoo!! Deep budget cuts coming your way!

it's a pretty scary thought that education, fire, and police are being cut like that, but hopefully it's just "trimming the fat" and it won't make that much of an impact.. tho i don't think there was much fat to begin with in education right? i really don't know about the other two. they said they are cutting this year's police cadets. what does that mean exactly?

Hey What, boy oh boy are they ever. Deep budget cuts indeed came my way this morning. I just found out that my job ends 12.31.08, and might even get a pay cut before then, if they don't just terminate me sooner because I've been more than 10 months.

Its really smart to cut the Fire & Police...more nonsence in our neighborhoods is the way to get this place back up on its feet again!
Ya know...we should get some more waterfalls around here, now that would help!

I'm so sorry cobblehiller.

Thanks I haz.

hey cobblehiller--that sucks! Hope you get something else quickly. What a bummer.
Posted by: wasder at November 6, 2008 12:10 PM
cobblehiller, I'm very sorry to hear that too. Is there anything we can do to keep our eyes open for other opportunities for you?
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 6, 2008 12:16 PM
Thanks wasder. I wonder if the police/firemen will be eligible for unemployment?
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 6, 2008 12:18 PM
Thanks Biff, I've been talking to a few recruiters, and I'll ramp up that effort tomorrow. I appreciate the support. If I stop talking to you guys it'll be because I'm trying not to cry here in the all-too-public-cube-farm.
It's just such a crappy comedown after the high of Obama's election.
Sorry for hijacking your thread What - Just timing I guess.

cobblehiller - You have my sincere and snark-free hopes that you find a new gig soon.

cobblehiller sorry about you losing your job. Maybe you can help me paint my bunker.
"It's just such a crappy comedown after the high of Obama's election."
There are no more back stops. The Election, The Olympics and The BS is over.
"Sorry for hijacking your thread What - Just timing I guess."
It's OK, just be well..
You see when they start cutting the Police and Fire Department budgets we have serious problems.

Aw, thanks Snark!
'As you were' everyone, please proceed with the usual hijinks! I could use the laughs...

Snark--you are not allowed to be non-snarky!
Posted by: wasder at November 6, 2008 1:38 PM
Thank you kindly What, I'll figure something out.
I'm pretty handy with a paint brush What, very neat and tidy. Now, were you thinking of a nice solid 'battleship grey' or were you thinking of something more 'desert storm camo'?!
I'm pretty clear on what's happening. Seems like it's going to get a whole lot uglier before it gets better...

You what's funny? We had a chance years ago to stop this Mutant Asset Bubble but no! Everyone thought they was smart. The smugness was so thick you could cut it with a knife. This is one of the reasons why I'm glad that this shit is imploding! To get back to sound fundamentals we need to go thru some pain. 3.5 million dollars for a house in Park Slope, 700k for a 2 Bedroom Condo in the Ghetto, 1500 a month for a Studio on Throop and Putnam and so on. This is going to be the most painful period of our lives...

What, my question to you is what could have been done to stop the MAB? As I have only come recently to the Brownstone Brooklyn real estate market I am unaware of things that were being done in the run up. If there are things that you think could have been done by the average person on this blog I would be interested to hear what they were.

Hey What, look what I found! It says..."Urban camo is always cool."

AAAAAGGGGGGGGG Are you that fucking Stupid Wasder?????????!!!!
You know what I'm done for today....
The What
Someday Wasder will get a fucking brain...

You know very well that I am not stupid What. You make a very definitive statement that "we had a chance to stop" the MAB. I asked you what the average person could have done about it. Not what Citibank could have done about it or what Lehman Brothers could have done about it. It is very unclear to me what the average aspiring home-owner could have done except to not buy anything, which is not much of an option. So rather than being an idiot why not try to answer my question?

So sorry to hear that cobblehiller. Just got excused from jury duty (a small price to pay for voting on Tuesday!) and missed a lot of the threads today.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 6, 2008 4:01 PM
Thanks Dave, it's ok, I've been needing to find something else to do anyway. This just adds a certain je ne sais quoi sense of urgency to it...aaiiieeee!
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 6, 2008 4:20 PM
for all of spitzer's faults, he was way ahead of the curve on the MAB until bush regulated his authority to act away.
Posted by: slick at November 6, 2008 10:18 PM
Somehow I totally missed this post. I am so sorry to hear you lost your job, Cobblehiller.

The only thing the average citizen could have done would have been to be a more critical and educated consumer. If people had not bought all the crap products offered out there just because they were on sale, maybe there would have been less junk produced, so that the present drop in the marketplace would have been less pronounced (as there wouldn't have been such a bubble). The problem was, and still is, that the US economy is based on junk, waste, and bad-credit, and has been for a long time.
The unnecessary crap we buy is really ridiculous, and the amount of waste we leave out on the curb is even worse.
