For those who are interested here is the tax photo from around 1940.

One of the things I love most about this house is the higher ground. It really does feel like you are separated from the surrounds (in a good way).

Above the hoi polloi!! Thanks Susan for that photo. Its especially nice to se a house with the correct dimmension shutters as opposed to what most people do, improperly measuring for shutters.

Where do I find "tax photos"? Im wondering what my Vic looked like back in the day.

Posted by: nybk01 at November 18, 2008 5:29 PM

Yeah, where do you find these photos Susan?

I feel I'm "cheating" on my house (that I'm in contract with...engaged to) since I still use the Elkins moniker. I might have to change my Brownstoner name or I will never get over this affair.

Yup...Im about to drop $50 on a pic of my house from 1940...this better be worth it! Damn!

Thanks for this, Susan. I live a few blocks away and walk by here often. It's great to see what it was like in better days. I really dig those cornice windows!

IF you go to the DOB site and find out the block and lot number on your own you can save $:

That is gorgeous. LOVE the porch. I'm picturing rockers.

Maybe I should re-visit the thoughts of owning this house. Will talk to hubby tonight. I'm trying to figure out which contractor owes us a huge favor.

Moi aussi. I can just imagine the members of AC/DC sitting out there with a nice glass of iced tea.

Nice. I'm so glad you posted this. This will greatly help whoever buys this. What a gorgeous home this will once again be.

When I received the photo of my house it showed those nice canvas awnings over each of the windows, a beautiful old storefront next door and a cable car on the corner.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 18, 2008 7:43 PM

Cable cars on Stuyvesant Ave in the 40's? How nice.

Posted by: Susan Elkins at November 18, 2008 8:11 PM

The cable cars ran down Halsey, right DIBS? I think I can see them in my tax photo from 1940. There were no cars parked on the street and you can see the shadow of the light post and photographer, who was wearing a hat that day.

Canvas awnings! Nicer than the red metal ones I "bought" with my house and then disgarded shortly afterwards. They are worse than a "work of art."

bkny--i just ordered one of my house too. If it is cool I will try to do a then and now type recreation for fun.

what's the original facade? It's not aluminum siding.

Posted by: slick at November 19, 2008 1:03 AM

11233...yes, the cable car was on Halsey.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 19, 2008 10:35 AM

wasder -- great idea.

Looks like wooden clapboard siding, as would have been the original finish. This could be the original finish, there is no reason it couldn't have lasted that long, if it was taken care of.

The LPC report on this house states that it stayed in the Elkins family until the twentieth century, when it was sold to a doctor. He may have been the owner at the time of this photo. After he sold it, it had many subsequent owners.

I love this house too. I used to walk past it on strolls through the 'hood when I first moved to NYC and rented an apt in Bay Ridge. I read somewhere that this house used to face West towards the water with a long lawn in front, and when the neighborhood started to be built up around it, it was lifted and turned around to face the street.

Thanks Susan, Now I really really love the house. Realtor called my hubby again last night which makes me think there were really no cash offers and they just wanted us to bid higher. My husband has not returned the call as we are still in decision mode (financially).

Oh my gosh, I'm a dummy. I didn't see the original HOTD on this house. This isn't the house in Bay Ridge I thought it was.

I looked at the old HOTD thread to see what the house looks like today. Sad. Interestingly the old insurance photo looks like the one in Bay Ridge I mistook it for. That house shows how this house could have been kept up and maintained over the years.

And your mother sucking head on the corner!
