Citibank Implodes!!!
Do get your money out! LMMFAO!!
Citigroup Board Said to Weigh Options as Stock Drops (Update2)
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=arsOx8GtZ7Uo&refer=home
Citigroup, once the biggest U.S. bank, with a stock market value of $274 billion at the end of 2006, dropped yesterday to about $26 billion, slipping to No. 5 after Minneapolis-based U.S. Bancorp. A plan Pandit announced this week to cut costs by shedding 52,000 jobs and an endorsement by billionaire Saudi investor Prince Alwaleed bin Talal didn’t assuage shareholders’ concern that bad loans and securities writedowns may extend a yearlong run of net losses totaling $20 billion.
Citigroup, once the biggest U.S. bank, with a stock market value of $274 billion at the end of 2006??? And all that "Market Cap" got wiped out in 2 years???!!
Plus you think that your Brownstone can't go down in value???

Still unanswered...
The What, with all due respect, I think we can only conclude you are a fool for the following reason.
With all your wisdom, and given you're certainty that you were the only one who saw the current economic events coming, you must have either:
1) Made literally billions in your investment decisions over the past year or so. If this is the case, why would you be wasting your time here and not sailing around the world or splitting your time between your castle in Scotland, your villa in Italy and your beach house in Hawaii.
2) Not believed in and/or listened to anything you said and made no $$$s since last year.
Which is it?

If you made billions and are only on this blog to try to drive me out of New York, you're a bigger idiot than even I could ever have imagined. See, I think Mr. B likes all the page views he generates, which is why he's never banned long. Now personally, I laugh when he talks about lubing someone's piehole, but that's cuz I'm crazy that way.
If you really want the What to get banned, what everyone has to do is refrain from answering his posts, and in fact, even from clicking on them. It's all about those clicks! Plus if no one answered him at all, he'd go away and start somewhere else.
Don't feed the trolls, OK Asshats? lol...
Posted by: denton at November 21, 2008 11:07 AM
For the record, I am not offended by what the ‘What’ wrote!
'Time for What to be banned again'
DIBS, I'm a true believer in the First Amendment, and do not believe in censorship on any level (well, maybe some instances, but it is extreme). I don’t think this calls for the What to be banned. He hasn’t said anything that we haven’t previously heard from him. Just because it’s directed toward me, a good person (go ahead laugh), doesn’t justify banishment.
Believe me I can handle comments and criticisms. Nothing shocks me. I have heard far more vulgar and lewd comments directed at me by better people than the ‘What’. I’ve also spewed more bawdy language than that myself.
I’ve also been criticized about things I’ve said and written (not here), but in my second profession, therefore leaving me opposed to censorship.
What people forget is that there are consequences for controversial comments and need to be prepared to deal with a broad spectrum of condemnation.
It is the responsibility of the proprietor of this forum to keep decorum. As a privately run entity, Mr. B can decide to do what he wishes.
Maybe, after I come back from Sahadi with my grapeleaves and chocolate covered nuts, I’ll spew some venom at the What.

Manzke ‘Disgusted’ by Hedge Funds, Seeks Investor-Rights Group
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=acMfhSDgRmwI&refer=home
Nov. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Sandra Manzke, an investor in hedge funds for more than 20 years, wants her peers to band together to stop what she calls “outrageous” behavior in the $1.5 trillion industry.
Manzke, 60, who founded Rye, New York-based Tremont Capital Management Inc. in 1985, sent an e-mail this week to 500 wealthy individuals, money managers and fund of funds calling on them to fight high fees and practices such as limiting or suspending client withdrawals. Her e-mail was forwarded to so many people that she’s gotten more than 500 responses, she said. All of them have been positive.
“While we all recognize the difficulties of the current market environment, I am appalled and disgusted by the activities of a number of hedge-fund managers,” she wrote in the missive, which asks investors to form a group -- the Hedge Fund Investors United Forum -- to protect clients’ rights. She declined to name specific funds until she compiles a list of those that aren’t acting in the best interest of clients.
I love it when they turn on each other. You see Derwood just grab a cold one, sit back and watch the nuclear explosions. They are so pretty....

I don’t think the What has a game in regards to courting woman. He’s definitely not a playa’
Here’s my advice to you.
Biff, depends on what stage of the courting game you’re in. Don’t use those lines on the first date, unless it’s a paid date. And whoever you’re on a date with, don’t call them ‘bayridgegirl’, I know I’m unforgettable!
Let’s go back to songs:

I agree with you What. I think they do this intentionally to get a rise out of you. I wish it wasn't so tempting to take their childish bait. I'd like them to knock it off. It seems like they try to incite you to try to get you to say something that will get you banned. So then they can feel good about themselves.
I think they should leave your posts alone. There are plenty of other places for anyone to post. It's a sense of entitlement they seem to have about the blog, and tromping over anything and anyone. It's turned a corner/gone too far this week.
I happen to think you've been pretty civil of late, not a surprise, I know you a little bit by now.
I just got really grossed out today. Usually I can ignore it, but for some reason it got to me. Maybe it's because I'm a woman, or maybe I just got fed up.

I have no problems of being civil but when the Asshats show up, I'm going to the top of my bunker and warming up the .50 cal! The reason why this have heated up is because of the collapsing of the Mutant Asset Bubble! People are going to get laid off soon and this holiday season is going to be real bad.

For Cobblehiller:
Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response sometimes seen in an abducted hostage, in which the hostage shows signs of loyalty to the hostage-taker, regardless of the danger (or at least risk) in which they have been placed.

‘I agree with you What.’
QOTD
Cobblehiller…believe it or not, we don’t sit around and plot what we’re going to post to intentionally entice the ‘What’. We don’t plan on saying any of these things to see what will piss him off (psst…if you haven’t noticed, he’s already a pissed off person).
Granted these posts tend to veer and go off topic, but so do many.
I’ll give it to you, we are childish at times, and this one did go to the deep end and rightfully so.
‘It's a sense of entitlement they seem to have about the blog, and tromping over anything and anyone. It's turned a corner/gone too far this week.’
Cobblehiller, I’m not entitled and I certainly don’t feel that way. Nobody is tromping over anything or anyone. This thread did go too far. But answer this question….DID I DESERVE THE COMMENT FROM THE WHAT AT 10:11AM?
What about this one….IS THE WHAT ENTITLED TO CALL EVERYONE ANY VULGAR WORD HE SEES BEFITTING?
'I'd like them to knock it off’
I’d like for the ‘What’ to ‘knock off’ referencing me in his sexual fantasies using boorish language.
And if he doesn’t, it really doesn’t bother me, because I’m a well tempered adult AND I DON’T CARE what people say or do. It’s their right.
‘Didn't mean to piss you off.’
Really, cobble. You don’t think I should be pissed off at what the ‘What’ said to me, UNPROVOKED. Do I need to remind you, or maybe it’ll ‘gross you out’ (first one at 10:11am). As a woman, you should be outraged that your friend the ‘What’ would use that language with a female, when she said nothing to inflame him. Yes, I retorted in my defense in a vulgar tone, but it seems that’s the only vernacular the ‘What’ understands.
‘It's a two way street, I know, and they need to back off.’
Cobble, you can back off when someone attacks you, but I don’t. I give it right back to them and sometimes in a manner not befitting a lady.
After his initial comment referencing me in an offensive manner, some called for his banishment. I stood up (11:10am) and defending freedom of speech and opposing censorship - so in a way, I was defending your friend and his liberties to say what ever he wants in what ever manner. Give me some credit.

cobblehiller, please check out derwood's Forum post just below this and see how The What tried to disrupt a civil conversation toward the end. Educate yourself...please!
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 3:53 PM
cobblehiller...get ahold of YOURSELF. This is just another one of the What's incessant day-after-day posts to get attention. Do you really think it needs to stay on topic???
Look at the What's first post at 9:34 that I reposted at 3:44 and tell me you believe that some serious discussion is going to ensue on this thread after he starts out with that shit.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 21, 2008 3:54 PM
BAck to civilty
'Yes, I loved that soundtrack and still do. You know a scene was shot under the Verrazzano Bridge? And his famous strut at the start during "Stayin' Alive" was around 86th Street just east of your 'hood?'
Yes, alot of the movie was shot in Bay Ridge. Hubby never saw the movie, so we watched it about a month ago. I grew up in this hood, so I recognized alot of the streets. The house he lived in was also in this area, in the 80's somewhere, we went by there after watching the movie. It's completely changed.
BTW - I'm listening to a 70's disco CD right now.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 3:58 PM
Hubby never saw the movie? Wow! A relative had the soundtrack and I must have burned out the turntable listening to it. This is actually making me want to see it again. I used to go to an Italian barber back in the day where every customer, no matter if 5 or 95 years old, came out with the exact same Tony Manero 'do!
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 4:04 PM
Did you do any of the dance moves?
Yeah, hubby hasn't seen alot of the great movies. I make him watch classics all the time. I forced him to watch Gone with the Wind...he got annoyed, cause I was saying the dialogue along with the movie.
Funny...Macho Man is now playing.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 4:10 PM
In Bay Ridge, we're still living the movie.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 4:13 PM
I believe I said:
"Knock it off, all of you. You've gone to far.
I'm disgusted."
I see some of your points BRG. I do not believe that you should be spoken to in that manner. And What has heard me say before, and it will come as no surprise to anyone that I do not condone it. That said, you guys, individually or collectively bait What. You could take the tack of leaving his threads alone or being civil. And granted, Dave's first post today was annoying but fairly benign. However, it was designed to incite What. Again, I do not condone the words used against you. Biff incited What, and you got caught in the crossfire. It needs to stop.
Posted by: cobblehiller at November 21, 2008 4:13 PM
"Did you do any of the dance moves?"
Which ones didn't I do?!? Although I had to do them at home in front of a mirror as I was still a few years away from being able to get into clubs.
I really enjoy watching older movies shot in New York. How about A Tree Grows in Brooklyn? That tugged on the old heart strings.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 4:16 PM
Cobble,
Truth be told...we're baiting each other and the 'What' is getting caught in the crossfire :)
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 4:18 PM
I for one would like to see us going back to being friendly and not letting What or anyone else tear us asunder. I have tried of late to find my own peace with What--discuss what he has to say when I find it in any way interesting or even if it pisses me off. The other times (like today) I stay away because nothing I could add would improve the situation. But it does bum me out to see people I like (Biff, DIBS, BRG, cobblehiller) fighting with each other. Maybe slopefarm and I should referee a mud wrestling match?
Seriously though, I don't know if there is "blame" here. What has gone out of his way enough times to antagonize and berate others and so it is not that surprising to see that others want to give it back to him. At the same time, there seemed to be a moment a week or two ago where we all had our place here and What could do his bat-shit crazy act in one corner and the Brownstoner type stuff could be discussed in another. There was some razzing and insulting but not to the degree we have seen today. But I find it hard to blame anyone here because I think of all you (even What in his bizarro way) as my friends. Hope we can figure out how to disagree in a more productive way than this. Also hope that nobody takes offense at what I have written here. It is just my off the sleeve reaction to this thread.

cobblehiller, seriously, get a grip! Please refer to The What's first post at 9:34 am involving me before I even made one comment. And can you please comment on derwood's post and tell me who incited whom?
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 4:20 PM
No, it's fine wasder, thanks. I really want it to be more peaceful too.
And it seemed for awhile that things had settled down. But today I just couldn't take it. Biff and DIBS are way out of line with me. Where I was upset at the group earlier, I've now taken offense at the things DIBS and Biff have said, they've been out of line with me this evening.

keeping this in here...no, DIBS, I don't know what they say...do I need that dictionary again?
Red Sky at night??????
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 5:05 PM
Okay..answered my own question...but doesn't make any sense except for one word....sailors!
Red sky at night, sailors delight.
When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.
Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.
A red sunrise reflects the dust particles of a system that has just passed from the west. This indicates that a storm system may be moving to the east. If the morning sky is a deep fiery red, it means a high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain is on its way.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 5:10 PM
BRG..."Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning" Its just about the weather. Don't read too much into it.

I am new here and just started reading some of the posts and quickly stumbled upon the controversy to some degree of The What's posts.
I have to say although he throws around insults he has some good points. It would be cool to have good discussion of the difference between invading and taking over a neighborhood because you could afford to buy up property and want to get rich off it, or choosing because you like something about the home and community and you want to invest and be a part of it.
I've lived in Bushwick for 8 years and have noticed waves of people (artist types) who worked hard to make this a better place to live and now are already being priced out. I don't know what will happen now since a lot of developments are going to be empty perhaps. I just wonder what is the compromise between all of this. I don't think that all people who move to Bushwick or Bedstuy to make a home there should "go back to Ohio". But I also agree that it's much better to not want to radically change the culture, for instance build relatively ugly brand new luxury condos that none of the local people including artists who've been around for years can afford.
Change is always going to happen everywhere. Where is the tolerance? I've never owned property. But I make wherever I live a home and get involved in the community. I'm from Michigan originally. Question for The What, do you think I should go back? Sadly its just as depressed there as the 'hood here and I think more so. People of all backgrounds and colors can't afford $700,000 brownstones. The majority can't. The economy crashing is not gleeful. It's true that the taxpayers are left holding the bag. The middle class and working poor have been screwed a lot and a few of them did it to themselves. A lot of rich people are miserable. But I think people will keep coming to Bushwick and Bedstuy because Manhattan has turned into luxury rental and franchise land and a lot of working people, artists, musicians etc... need affordable housing with access to Manhattan. It doesn't make sense to me that "hipster kids" with $10 bucks in their pocket who are just as poor usually as everyone else get hit with a bat and mugged because they are on someone's turf and perceived to be rich. Although I'm also annoyed at trendy fluff restaurants and cafe's with attitude that attract people seemingly oblivious to where they are. Maybe that's what bothers The What so much.

bushwickpoet That's a very good question. I don't have the answer but I remembered the good ole days of the 70's and 80's. I'm seeing those same patterns again and I am afraid.
I know about the dynamics of living a bad neighborhood but I don't know if you do.
Things are going to very rough and just because you asked me this question in a civil way, I hope the best for you. Just understand the surroundings and adapt to the circumstances.

Good morning What, Thank you for your note above. Sorry I didn't comment sooner, I needed a little time to think, and it was a crazy busy weekend.
I appreciate what you have to say. And as I have said umpteen times before, I like reading your posts. I won't always agree with everything you say, or better put 'how' you say it, but for the most part I think your posts are interesting and bear thought and consideration. I think you and I have similar feelings in respect to what our neighborhoods, and greater Brooklyn, were like so many years ago, and the changes we have seen them go through as we grew up and now. I feel some connection to you in that respect. You and I have always had a good rapport, and I appreciate that.
I won't comment on the 'asshat' factor. It's not worth it to me. I am still surprised by and digesting the various responses. I have bigger 'fish to fry' in my life at the moment - job, family, Better Half - so I'll focus on those things instead.
One day perhaps you and I will meet for coffee - or maybe something less caffinated! [:)] and we can mull over/dissect the finer points of some of the topics of interest to us.
In the meantime, I'll take a step back here on the blog, and keep reading your posts, and try to get back to the feeling and reasons that I enjoyed being here.

derwood, The What isn't banned (as far as I know). Mr. B has just, like he said he would do on Friday, remove Forum posts that were not directly related to topics that the Forum was intended to be used for. There's nothing to stop The What from posting on the front page of the blog. If he's going to disappear because he can't have his own little thread (why can't he post in other threads like everyone else), he really should just start his own site.
And since you're reasonable, please understand, as we've said here infinitum, that we are not denying things are bad or that there was no real estate/asset bubbles. We get it. There is no new information being presented in these threads that we couldn't have gotten from the various websites which The What cuts and pastes from. As incredulous as he is thinking we don't get it, we're more incredulous that he still thinks he's the only one who knows what's happening. Many of the posters he likes to put down are in finance and on the front lines of today's events - unlike him. As much as he likes to convince himself he's a genius, we all know what he knows and then some. He'll never admit it because it'll ruin his shtick, but it's the truth.
Regardless, he won't disappear from here; nobody really believes that. He'll be back posting on the blog that he long ago claimed jumped the shark but never permanently left.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 24, 2008 1:25 PM
Biff, I understand that. But I think if we are to be vigilant about what B-stoner posts and what he doesnt Im sure there will be plenty of posts that are not specifically on topic.. It is just concerning to me the screening of material that seems to be more ideologically driven than content driven. I dont know, I have concerns when it comes to censoring based on ideological content (like the Fairness Doctrine that looks the FCC will be passing under O's administration). I think people are adults and let the people deem what is "print" worthy or not. If people don't give a damn about him you have 2 choices 1. engage him or ignore and his viewpoints will be vetted by his peers. Obviously people myself included do enjoy his posts, which you can plainly see by the number of posts to his threads outnumbering others by 20 to 30 times the volume. Just one man's opinion. History will bear the truth about those whose censor based on ideological difference and masking this censorship under editor's prudence..
good luck!
vive la what!
someday soon this war will end!
Posted by: derwood at November 24, 2008 1:41 PM
derwood, I understand your concern and as I've said over and over, I don't believe anyone should be banned from posting. You and I are probably much more in agreement on this than you think - I've been a huge Noam Chomsky fan since before his Manufacturing Consent and read (and agreed with) just about everything people like him, Howard Zinn, etc. have written on free speech and the media. In fact, The What and I also agree on many things, not least of which is our strong backing of Obama and the Iraq invasion.
But I really don't think Mr. B is censoring anyone or anything based on ideological content (he's removed past posts of mine and daveinbedstuy despite people somehow thinking we are part of the "Brownstoner establishment".) If I thought he was, I would be as quick to call him out on it as anyone.
Again, the question to me is, can The What still post on the main page and, if not, then I think that's wrong and we should confirm he's banned and ask why. If he can post but chooses not to because he prefers to post back in the Forum, that's not censorship. I have a feeling if I post something in the Forum tomorrow mentioning how wonderful I think Paulson is (obviously hypothetical example), I don't think it would last very long either.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 24, 2008 2:00 PM
I wasn't going to comment on this but Biff, you said something that disturbed me.
'our strong backing of Obama and the Iraq invasion.'
Biff, you really supported the Iraq invasion?
I'm rethinking our friendship. I'm a bit troubled by your view on this.
I don't want to get into the politcs of the war, just confirm your view.
Practice your usual diplomacy here, or you might get a nasty email from me. Not a super nice one.

"Biff, you really supported the Iraq invasion?"
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!
Immediate re-write by Biff required and shown below:
"not least of which is our strong backing of Obama and OPPOSITION TO the Iraq invasion."
BRG, I was COMPLETELY against the Iraqi invasion (if I was for it, I would be referring to it as a war, which it isn't). I joined every local protest prior to the war and was feverishly trying to change the opinions of those around me (i.e., at work) who supported it, which is something I could not believe they could do. My very mention of Chomsky (one of the strongest critics of US foreign policy) should make my position clear. Regardless, the people were lied to (about WMD) but even so, many of us saw through the lies right away and tried all we could to have the U.S. stay out of Iraq. The awarding of mind-blowing contracts to Haliburton and other of Cheney's interests made the bloodshed all the more appalling. I've mentioned many times my thoughts on the war and the U.S. slaughter of over 100,000 innocent Iraqi civilians and even posted a link to a site that presents statistics on such carnage to show exactly how bloody our hands are. This is unfortunately just one of many military horrors initiated by the US that has resulted in destruction of countless civilians worldwide. And people think we're hated because they're jealous of our freedom!
Now where's my nice message??
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 24, 2008 3:06 PM
Okay, then.....and thank you for clarifing that.
'Now where's my nice message??'
When I have time, I'll send you an email. Have been very very busy, and I got burnt out this weekend. I told you it was going to happen. I am physically and mentally exhausted.
So, sorry for my lazy responses.
