Aunt Suzie's
I cant help resisting to tell everyone that im starving myself now to be ready for Aunt Suzie's tonight! Stuffed artichokes...stuffed peppers, Gewurztraminer
wine and a choice of 50 pastas! WhoOoOoO!
Comments
I'd just starve myself rather than eat there.
Posted by: denton at November 21, 2008 4:32 PM
Why do you say that? This is one of my favorite places....I think their food is great.
Posted by: nybk01 at November 21, 2008 4:34 PM
i cant wait to eventually try this place out.. any suggestions on the pastas there? tht's the place that says free pasta during happy hour right if you spend 10 bux or more?
*rob*

denton, how could you put such a damper on nybk01's night? Ok, I've heard very mixed reviews of Aunt Suzie's, but damn I love the youthful exuberance shown in this Forum post!
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 4:41 PM
I will admit...some of the dishes I got there havent been the best...but they offer so many pastas so I guess its expected. The stuffed mushrooms are killer...I get them every time. So are the stuffed artichokes...just like my grandma made them. I think Ill go for the eggplant parm tonight. Oh...my wife loved the pear salad.

Where's Aunt Suzies? Why didn't you post a GMAP??? How can a place called Aunt Suzie's sound like it's Italian. Inquiring minds want to know nybk01. You can't just post something like that and leave us hnging!!! :)
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 21, 2008 4:50 PM
Personally I believe that Italians know very good Italian food, Chinese know Chinese food and etc.... Aunt Suzie owner just so happens to me my neighbor for the past 20 years. A great person. Her food however, although reasonably priced is OK, yet not very good Italian food. Want to try a great reasonably priced restaurant? Try Gino's in Bay Ridge. Great Food!
Posted by: Giovanna at November 21, 2008 4:56 PM
HAHAHAHA Giovanna. Most of the Chinese restaurants in Bed Stuy are run by actual Chinese. The food is the most god awful Chinese food I've ever eaten.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 21, 2008 5:03 PM
I'll pass on Gino's..wasn't impressed.
Anywhere else for good Italian in Brooklyn.
One of my favorite in NYC is Cara Mia in Hell's Kitchen

Like I said above...not every dish is the best, but the overall atmosphere is great and you have a huge selection. The place is always packed on Friday and Sat nights.
I would also recommend Ginos...been there a hundred times!
Posted by: nybk01 at November 21, 2008 5:11 PM
I definatly want to know other Italian restaraunts that people like...personally I love Ginos and Aunt Suzies...but other people dont think so highly of them...I would recommend Chianti on 3rd and 86th...I love that place...the fod is really good:
Posted by: nybk01 at November 21, 2008 5:15 PM
I'm with Denton on this one.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at November 21, 2008 5:18 PM
I liked Peperoncino on 5th Ave. The wines were cheap, the salads were great and the pizza was fantastic. The service was excellent. I have not ventured into the rest of the menu yet though...pastas, meat & fish entrees but the pizza was excellent.
Hopefully Saraghina on Lewis & Halsey will be open before January. The tasting I had there last week puts that place on a whole different level. He owns Piadina in Manhattan.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 21, 2008 5:19 PM
Chainti has fallen out of favor with me. I used to love the place and the food, and I'm sure the food is still good. But the last time we were there, the service sucked in a very rude and obnoxious way.
We have a friend who comes in from out of town and everytime insists on going to Carmine's (we take her to the one on the upper west side, never a crowd like times square)
Anywhere else, people??
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 5:24 PM
denton...is that range hooked up yet??? You caused quite a controversy on here yesterday. Yes, it was your fault. We want to see those "after" pics before turkey day
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 21, 2008 5:25 PM
Pizza...Yummy.
I have to go with John's on Bleecker...I'll wait on line.
NYBK01...have you tried Nino's Pizza yet...on 3rd and 91st street...Grandma Slice is killer.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 5:28 PM
Any other good Italian restaurants in Bay Ridge/PS/Redhook/Cobble Hill that anyone can recommend? I'v been to most places but I cant remember them (except Aunt Suzie's that most of you dont like!).
Posted by: nybk01 at November 21, 2008 5:30 PM
BRG, good call on the Carmine's on the UWS (vs. the theater district one which has impossibly long waits). It's definitely not the best Italian food by any stretch, but it's a fun place to bring out of towners for a different kind of experience. Just to see the look on their faces when the massive plate of calamari arrives is worth it.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 5:31 PM
No...didnt try Ninos yet. Ill make a note of it.
Posted by: nybk01 at November 21, 2008 5:31 PM
Well, if you want to include Manhattan, my two favorites are right next to each other on 1st Ave and 61st. Cantina Toscana is the best of Tuscan cooking...pappardelle with wild boar ragout being my favorite dish. It's very small but the dishes are exquisite home Tuscan cooking.
Next door is East River Cafe, a staple of mine for the last 13 years when I was living on the UWS. You'd think that spaghetti carbonara is an easy dish and found all over but none of these places do an authentic carbonara the eay its done in Italy...except East River Cafe.
The worst carbonara I've ever had was at Queen on Court St.

BRG..when Saraghina opens I'll take you and Biff there. You have to come to Bed Stuy though. You will not regret it. The pizza is awesome. It's a real wood fired oven.
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 21, 2008 5:36 PM
UES, sorry
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at November 21, 2008 5:39 PM
You're on, DIBS, that is if Biff agrees.I don't mind coming to Bed Sty. I'm there and in Crown Heights more than I need to be.
It's getting Biff, to leave his enclave that might be a problem. He is kinda Pasty.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 5:40 PM
Hey, thanks for the invite, DIBS. I would love to go.
"Pasty"?
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 5:49 PM
Hey Biff, he also invited me...do you still want to go knowing that?
Pasty...I think I spelled it right. Look it up, maybe in a slang dictionary.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 5:53 PM
sorry, not a slang dictionary...it's not a curse. maybe look it up in an urban dictionary.

"Hey Biff, he also invited me...do you still want to go knowing that?"
Shoot, I didn't check the fine print. DIBS, let me think about this and get back to you!
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 5:56 PM
^^^^maybe I should use a dictionary to check spelling
Well, any more italian restaurant recommendations in Brooklyn??
Posted by: bayridgegirl at November 21, 2008 5:58 PM
nybk01, can we get a de-brief of the meal on Monday? You'll have to do it on the main page, however, as I don't believe we'll be allowed these freewheeling Forum posts after today.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 6:02 PM
I think Im just gonna go to Aunt Suzies tonight...Ill do more research later and try another place next week or something. I need those stuffed mushrooms...Iv been craving them all week.
Posted by: nybk01 at November 21, 2008 6:04 PM
nybk01, good for you. Have a great meal.
Posted by: Biff Champion at November 21, 2008 6:06 PM
Ill let you know on Monday!
Posted by: nybk01 at November 21, 2008 6:08 PM
DIBS, we're priming tom'w, painting Sunday, hood goes in Monday, along with plumbing inspection; range Tues whether or not we pass, furniture Wed. Tight schedule but with any luck all six burners and both ovens going Thurs!
BTW I got my TOH mag and I was reminded, with the Arts and Crafts kitchen reno featured therein, that I only got six burners plus griddle (48") when I coulda got eight (60")!

For atmosphere (decent but not spectacular food): Bamonte's in Williamsburg. More modern italian in B'burg with nice atmosphere: Aurora on North 3rd.
Hands down our favorite Italian is Manetta's in LIC. The decor is pretty bad, but the food is amazing (and consistently amazing) as well as reasonable. The service is also top-notch.
We have also had good, reliable food at Frankie's 457 on Court in Cobble Hill. It gets so crowded as to distract from the dining experience too.
I have not been impressed with any of the Italian food in Park Slope.

Sam's
238 Court Street
Yummy!
Posted by: mh at November 22, 2008 9:46 AM
Bamonte's is on the top of my list. It has been there for over 100 years. Its an old world Italian run family business.I have been going there for years. Many famous people have eaten there. While there I sat next to Joe DiMaggio, and on another occasion met Ben Stiller and his parents.

ny01 and Bay Ridge Girl, try Tuscany Grill located on 3rd and 87th. I had wild mushroom pasta there last summer and it was great.
Posted by: italiana71 at November 22, 2008 2:40 PM
Love L+B Spumoni Gardens, of course!
Posted by: mh at November 22, 2008 4:58 PM
frankie's 457 on court is awesome (too hard to get into though) but you def gotta go to Fragole on court and 1st place(?). Some of the best italian food that isnt the overcooked, monster plate variety (no tracksuits either).
