Where is Wasder?

Where is Wasder?

Holy Mole! I am sitting here in the living room of my new home, negotiating stacks of boxes and trying to find my toothbrush. What a day, moving day. Walking out the door of one place for the last time and stepping through the threshold of another for the first. I can already see my family in a few weeks, molding our lives around this charming, slightly goofy but still solid structure. Can't believe I can put my daughter to bed and then walk DOWNSTAIRS to another floor where I don't have to tiptoe around for fear of waking her up. Or walk down another flight of stairs and sit in my office and ponder where the hell my next gig is going to come from. So many funny new noises here too. The radiators make different sounds than the ones in my old place and there are the occasional creaks and groans of a house built in the late 19th century.

So where is Wasder? Happily ensconced in the chaos of the end of the first day in his new house. Better start to learn how to fix stuff!

Thoughts?

Let me be the first to offer my heartfelt congratulations.

It's great having separate floors and lots more space, right? I have a split here and I hate it because the sound travels.

Very pretty entrance way, mazel tov on the house!

Posted by: pattunia at October 29, 2008 1:30 AM

Where is Wasder? Where is the What? I'm sure he'll have some words of congratulation to offer as well, hehe.

But seriously, congratulations. And not only do you have to learn to fix stuff, you have to get some people in your Rolodex to fix stuff that you can't fix. Especially the boiler.

Posted by: denton at October 29, 2008 3:13 AM

Yes, congratulations. If I knew where you were I'd bring the pizzas and beer over!!!

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 29, 2008 8:08 AM

Sounds like the same feelings we had 3 years ago (and still appreciate today). I hope your stairs don't creak like mine, just ruining the whole second floor advantage.
Congratulations!

Posted by: cornetor at October 29, 2008 8:52 AM

Is that your place? Do you mind telling me how wide it is? I'm interested because you have the dividing wall between the stairs and the parlor floor, which is something I've thought about recreating at my place. My wife says it would make the house too narrow -- we only have 16.5 ft. She might be right, but having the wall would be nice in so many other ways....

Posted by: slopenick at October 29, 2008 8:57 AM

We'll be over this weekend to say hi! I must say your entry looks remarkably neat and tidy - we took the tear it apart and live in it while we are fixing it route (not highly recommended).

Posted by: Putnamdenizen at October 29, 2008 9:39 AM

If the rest of the house is as nice as your entrance, it must be a beauty - congrats Wasder! Enjoy the house - sounds like you really deserve it.

Posted by: Miss Muffett at October 29, 2008 9:47 AM

Congrats Wasder. If the entrance is any indication, the house looks beautiful and graceful. Enjoy.

Like putnamdenizen, we did not have a "day" we could celebrate moving in. First we moved in to the rental, with no hot water, then we got the gas going, then we got the rental kitchen counters (no more plywood "butcher block"), when we moved bedrooms upstairs, then bathroom, and fonally kitchen. And that was after a year of the nomadic life. Your way is the better way, by far.

Posted by: slopefarm at October 29, 2008 9:49 AM

Wasder, is there any place we can see more pics!?

Posted by: nybk01 at October 29, 2008 9:53 AM

Congratulations Wasder! Many years of happiness in your beautiful new home!

"Better start to learn how to fix stuff!" Do you have lots to do?

Posted by: HmmWhichNeighborhood at October 29, 2008 9:58 AM

CONGRAT'S!!! You done good.

Love your entry. Nice Glass Paned doors.

Are those sun rays?
I hope you have lots of sunshine in your new home, congrat's again.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 29, 2008 10:00 AM

Looks beautiful from what we can see. Thanks for sharing and congratulations wasder; a great home for a great guy. I wish you and your family many years of happiness in your new digs.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 29, 2008 10:16 AM

Congrats again Wasder!

Get the renos out of the way now because you won't want to do it in three years time when you're all settled in!

Posted by: the chicken at October 29, 2008 10:20 AM

Wasder, you have Internet on moving day!? You're so organized. Congratulations again on the move. Very exciting.

Posted by: mopar at October 29, 2008 10:33 AM

Congratulations Wasder and family!
Perfect time to move in, before the really cold days arrive.

Blessings on you and yours in your new home.

Posted by: bren at October 29, 2008 10:37 AM

So exciting wasder! Congratulations again!

And I second the fact that your entry hall looks remarkably neat for moving day!

I particularly like that little square of inlay on the floor under the chandelier! (I love little details like that.)

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 29, 2008 10:38 AM

Wasder, post more pics.
Do it anonymously and tell us it's in Mill Basin.

Hope you found your toothbrush by now, it's almost lunch time.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 29, 2008 10:46 AM

Congrats and happy settling in! Let me know where to send the new fondue set.

Posted by: SnarkSlope at October 29, 2008 10:50 AM

Good move

Posted by: sebb at October 29, 2008 11:16 AM

Congratulations. Looks like a beautiful home.

Posted by: theandrewlee at October 29, 2008 11:32 AM

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Wasder and Wasderlings. What a beautiful entryway, I love the inlay in the floor, as well as the French doors. Simple and beautiful.

I also envy the easy move, ah, the memories. I slept on my couch surrounded by piles of boxes and furniture the first night in my place. I couldn't even find all the pieces to my bed. Yours is definitely the way to go.

All the best, and look forward to more photos and stories. Here's a virtual toast to you and your new home. (clink!)

Hey Everyone--sorry for being so slack in responding. Unpacking boxes and no internet except what I can steal from the neighbors. But thanks for congrats from everyone.

Dave--we can get some pizza and beers together sometime hopefully.

Cornetor--the stairs do creak a bit but not so much as to wake the children as far as I can tell.

Slopenick--yes that is the entrance way to my house. It is a 20 footer. I think your wife might be right that recreating that wall would make the parlor too skinny. Because my parlor is going to be my office I need the separation.

PutnamDenizen--please do stop by and say hi. That would be great. Surprisingly, this house, while dirty needed very little in the way of structural reconstruction so our renovation was mostly details and painting.

Miss Muffett--thanks. Hopefully we can provide some inspiration for you when you take the plunge.

Slopefarm--sounds intense what you guys went through. As my wife is 7 months pregnant right now your way wasn't an option anyway, but again we got lucky in that we found a house that showed poorly because of dirtiness/messiness but was actually in pretty decent structural shape. I feel like we got a steal in many ways.

nybk01--Brownstoner put up a blog from me a couple of weeks ago with the "before" pictures. As soon as we set up I will post some "afters".

hhhmmmmwhich---nothing to fix yet but you know how it goes. A broken radiator here, a clogged gutter there etc. Nothing I have ever had to deal with before so I am on the steep learning curve of home ownership.

Bayridgegirl--those are indeed sun rays. This place gets tons of light which is awesome.

Biff--thanks. You are a good man.

mopar--stealing internet from the neighbors!

cobblehiller--yes I love that woodwork on the floor too. Didn't really notice it until we sanded and then it just popped out.

denton--you are right. Where is the What? This would be such a perfect punch bowl for him to foul.

Thanks again to everybody!

Posted by: wasder at October 29, 2008 11:53 AM

MM--thanks so much! But in re not finding your bed pieces, you are lucky the bed breaks into pieces because our bed doesn't fit up the stairs! Big bummer that I am still trying to figure out.

Posted by: wasder at October 29, 2008 12:04 PM

Hey wasder- let me add my congrats! how wonderful for you and your family. Although I live in a apartment floor through, not a house, I had moved here from a tiny, narrow, dark place in the Heights. It took me several months to realize that i could actually walk through a room without bumping into a piece of furniture and I could actually get out of the tub without cracking my knee on the sink or my shoulder on the toilet.

All the best!

Posted by: bxgrl at October 29, 2008 12:27 PM

As of 12:25:

Wasder's new home -- 24
What's rehash of the national housing slump - 1

Nice to see this community getting its priorities in order. An auspicious debut for Wasder's home. Can't wait to see more picks.

P.S. If I can learn to flash a roof, caulk a tub, balance the radiator vents and strip a peeling heat riser, so can you. My wife still won't let me touch the electrical (except when she's mad). She's probably right.

Posted by: slopefarm at October 29, 2008 12:27 PM

bxgirl--haven't seen you in a while. Hi! Thanks for the congrats. Yes, more space is a beautiful thing.

Slopefarm--that's the kind of stuff I am talking about. It sounds a bit intimidating right now but I am sure I will be up to it when the time comes. Probably won't ever screw with electrics though.

Posted by: wasder at October 29, 2008 12:32 PM

Your post made me think; there are few feelings better than the first few days in a new place, especially when (as all purchasers do) you went through hell to get it. Congratulations.

Posted by: jawbreaker at October 29, 2008 12:33 PM

Also, let me say that the photo above was not actually taken on moving day. I am sorry I didn't have an actual photo from last night which is far removed from the peaceful vibe of the photo above. Boxes, tape wads, disassembled furniture etc are not things one ends up photographing much as usually one is in the mood that might best be described as "homocidal." Fortunately I had amazing movers (who I will recommend in a separate post cause they deserve it) and I managed to keep my head for the most part.

Posted by: wasder at October 29, 2008 12:35 PM

yes! - congrats!!
the foyer is gorgeous!!!

Posted by: gemini10 at October 29, 2008 1:13 PM

so wasder, that photo is "staged" then?

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 29, 2008 1:48 PM

Let me further say that I appreciate so much the many Brownstoner regulars (you know who you are) who talked me through the various issues and crises that arose in these two transactions. It was a nerve-wracking time to be buying and selling as you can well imagine. I came into this process in the spring (first saw Brownstoner maybe in April) fairly green in the ways of the market and the effects of the economy on home sales etc. This summer was a big crash course in all of that (crash literally I guess!) and trying to wade through the paranoia in some of the posts to find the truth. I certainly came around to many of the points that were being made by some of the more bearish members of the site, and that education was itself emotionally fraught. But in the end, having digested all of this information I still went forward with the selling of my co-op and the buying of the house. It took a lot of nerve to pull the trigger in the end and I am proud of the wife and I for seeing it through. But the point is this site was crucial to the process for me so thanks to everybody who gave positive input or necessary negative input. It was a trip.

"If I can learn to flash a roof...and strip a peeling heat riser, so can you"

SnarkSlope, do you want to take this one or should I?

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 29, 2008 2:34 PM

Biff, Snark (and Dave, too, for that matter)

You guys need to start paying me for these set-ups.

Posted by: slopefarm at October 29, 2008 3:17 PM

slopefarm, we should. But I just lobbed a nice one to Dave under the Co-op of the Day thread...

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 29, 2008 3:21 PM

Hello Wasder and congratulations once again. I tend to come in at the tail end of these threads due, unfortunately, to work. BUT, your entry is gorgeous and the worst is over I guess. We put an offer in on a house this morning, but I hear we have a competitor, so this may devolve into an old-style bidding war. More tk...

Posted by: Susan Elkins at October 29, 2008 3:24 PM

Susan, congratulations to you as well. I know you've been searching long and hard for awhile. The old-style bidding war is nerve wracking, but I'm hoping you come out on top.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 29, 2008 3:28 PM

Belated congratulations Wasder! I am in the midst of renovating ours while we live on our top floor rental and my wife is pregnant too, so I really can relate. I love your entryway (saved the photo to keep for when/if we ever get to renovate the entrance hall and doors). Happy brownstoning!

Posted by: Colonel at October 29, 2008 3:29 PM

Biff, thanks "on top" is definitely where I want to be.

Posted by: Susan Elkins at October 29, 2008 3:40 PM

Susan, you've been hanging around DIBS and I far too long ;-)

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 29, 2008 3:47 PM

I know! That's exactly what I though after I pushed the post button.

Posted by: Susan Elkins at October 29, 2008 3:53 PM

....and another thread on Brownstoner devolves...

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 29, 2008 4:06 PM

cobblehiller, it's all my fault, as usual, but it's wasder's thread and at least he's understanding and appreciates a good double entendre!

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 29, 2008 4:12 PM

It's my fault for taking the bait. Sorry Wasder!

Posted by: Susan Elkins at October 29, 2008 4:20 PM

YEAH, WASDER!!!!!!

Posted by: 11233 at October 29, 2008 4:20 PM

Biff, shame on you....Luring unsuspecting posters into your world of double entendres.

Let's turn it around.
Wasder, congrat's again.

Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 29, 2008 4:42 PM

"Let's turn it around."
[enter cop, stage left]

Damn, BRG, I just can't help myself!

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 29, 2008 5:05 PM

Wasder leads what 46-1 and counting. Was that post blocked or are we seeing a genuine boycott/evolution on this site?

Oh, and I seem to have aided and abetted the delinquency of this thread quite a bit, too, Susan (see Biff @ 2:34).

Posted by: slopefarm at October 29, 2008 5:08 PM

and you screwed it up!!!
[enter hot cop, stage left]

and if that's dialogue, you're giving hot cop, hope nobody misreads it. Last time someone tried to give this cop some lines, accusations flew.

Congrat's, Wasder!!

Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 29, 2008 5:10 PM

Last time I did some lines, accusations flew!

Yeah, congrats again, wasder!

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 29, 2008 5:18 PM

Susan--It is entirely possible (I am sure you already know this) that the competition is phantom (as a way to light a fire under you). Seems like a strange time for a bidding war to break out. Good luck to you.

Everybody else, shame on you for polluting my wholesome thread with your perverted minds (ha ha). Actually I am proud to be host to such fine hijacking. Talk to you all soon.

Posted by: wasder at October 29, 2008 5:38 PM

AND--to top it all off, I just closed on my co-op so the whole thing is really and truly done! WHEEEWWWW!

Posted by: wasder at October 29, 2008 5:39 PM

[exit hot co-op]

Posted by: SnarkSlope at October 29, 2008 5:50 PM

I'm late to the party here, but congratulations Wasder! Wishing you and your family many years of happiness in your beautiful new home! Mazel Tov. :)

Posted by: I_haz_TWO_toilets at October 29, 2008 6:04 PM

[exit hot co-op]

Yep, that was the last piece of the puzzle for me. And until this afternoon I was still on pins and needles waiting for all of the chickens to be hatched. Now there are no more potential hitches in my master plan.

I haz--better late than never to the party. Thanks for the nice words.

Posted by: wasder at October 29, 2008 6:16 PM

Internet-less due to f*ing Time Warner...how did you do it?

Congrats, wasder, the entry looks great...hope you enjoy your house much!

Posted by: cmu at October 29, 2008 6:21 PM

cmu--I have had Time Warner cable for internet, phone, and TV for a while but they couldn't come around til mid next week. But apparently one of my neighbors has a powerful router and an unprotected network so I am in luck.

Posted by: wasder at October 29, 2008 6:28 PM

Lucky you. The wireless paranoiacs around me are all secured. Damn them all, don't they know we're on the verge of becoming a socialist republic?
