what is halloween like in brownstone brooklyn?!

i love this time of year and especially halloween. i was just curious what it's like. do lots of kids get dressed up and go trick or treating and stuff around the neighborhood? i never really saw any trick or treaters in manhattan. im already loving some of the halloween decorations up on some peoples stoops. how's christmas? lots of lights? i know some people think it's tacky but i love it. the more lights the better!

Kids do dress up. The trick or treating seems to be to stores. The same as in the Upper West Side. It's cute, except that some kids seem too rude and greedy.

You must go check out the famous Halloween house in Clinton Hill (Clinton Ave between Lafayette and DeKalb). A feature film set designer lives in this house (can't remember the number of the house 323 Clinton perhaps?) and they do the most amazing and elaborate Halloween presentations (with sets and actors etc). Worth checking out.

And Rob, thanks for giving us other things to talk about besides the economy.

There is a pretty large parade down 7th Ave., kids and grownups alike. Great trick or treating on the side streets around 7th Ave, especially around 1st, Garfield, etc. Very festive. Last year Scottaditto was giving out free homemade chocolate ice cream and i sat on a stoop with my 4 yo and pigged out

The best Halloween scene is in Windsor Terrace, just below the slope, on Fuller and Howard Place between PPW (9th Ave) and 10th Ave

Lots of trick or treaters visit private houses in Prospect Heights. I put bodega candles on the stoop and some sort of halloween decoration on the front door so that parents know to stop by. Just be sure to be home early if you want to be visited by little ones. They start coming around in the afternoon but are usually done by about 6:30 pm. Very cute and lots of adorable costumes. The tweens and teens, unaccompanied by adults of course, tend to show up a little later and can be bratty so I often close up shop then.

Crowlish is right, Windsor Terrace has a happening trick or treater population. The prime blocks are mobbed and most houses participate in some way. I can't wait to put up my decorations next week - Im planning something that should be fun for the passerbys.

I don't know how it compares with other areas but I would imagine any area that has a big concentration of famiilies would also have a similar crowd.

Brooklyn Heights has great trick ot treating throughout, but especially concentrated on Garden Place (which is blocked off for the night) and the surrounding streets. "Mobbed" is an understatement - you can barely get up to some of the stoops. Many of the stores on Montague Street also hand out candy.

Reading the above, it looks like there are many terrific scenes across the borough - eat it, Manhattan!

in bed-stuy for the past 4 years the Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant and the Stuyvesant Heights Parent Association have teamed up to do a "Halloween House Tour". They usually have a gathering or parade for the kids in Fulton Park and then give out a map of homes that have signed up to give out candy. The event is always successful and the kids love knowing exactly which houses have candy.

Rob,

If you want to check out Christmas lights...you can check out Dyker Heights...we were all having a discussion about Dyker a few weeks back that was very funny...Ill look for the link. I'm in Bay Ridge...you may want to check it out some weekend...take the bus to some where in the high 70s and walk down to Ridge or Colonial from 70-86 st...there are some beautiful houses...mansions, Victorians and Brownstones. Ridge Blvd is beautiful in fall time.

As mentioned above, Park Slope always has a large children's parade. This year the Civic Council is also sponsoring a fundraiser for the Old Stone House, a Costume Contest, free Halloween Trick or Treat bags, and more. See: http://parkslopeciviccouncil.org/halloween-parade

Hey Rob -- Carroll Gardens has a fun Halloween scene, particularly the "Place" blocks. Nice Christmas lights too. Take the F to Carroll Street and just start walking around. Are you dressing up? My kid is going as a mermaid and my husband and I are hotly debating either McCain & Palin (I'd be McCain, he'd be Palin) or Thing 1 & Thing 2 from Cat in the Hat.

okay i have to go look at that dyker heights thread, thanks. ive seen dyker heights mentioned in various places on this site (im assuming in a funny way or something..) hahha. okay ill go check it out! and thanks for sharing your halloween stories! seems like halloween is going to be a lot more halloween than it was in manhattan (i guess for the parade, but that's such a mob scene and usually not as much fun as you think it would be.) 'specially if youve been drinking and gotta pee

nybk, one of my neighbors actually took me on a tour when i first moved to park slope, of bay ridge, to show me the gingerbread house. except it was dark out and we really couldnt see it :( but of the houses i did see they were nice!

On our street people signal that they're giving out treats by leaving stoop lights on. The Children's Parade on 7th Av. is usually utterly charming - families dressed in themes, kids wide-eyed at being out late, gemutlich feeling all around.

Cobble Hill is also wonderful for Halloween. I think all of brownstone brooklyn is probably pretty great - being the center of the world for small-fry and all.

since halloween is on the weekend for 2009, and i might actually be at home before it's dark, i'm considering handing out treats from the stoop.

what time do the cute trick or treaters come out?

what time am i going to get mugged by mobs of out-of-control teenagers?
