I wonder what this mess says to the Reagan republicans who started the deregulation.

Btw, did any one else read this article in Der Spiegel? A friend sent me the link: http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,581502,00.html

Great link cobblehiller. Always interesting to get the European's take on our travails. Is there any doubt that George W Bush has been the worst president of all time?

Posted by: wasder at October 2, 2008 11:41 AM

The current problems stem from a nationwide over-leveraging. That includes people borrowing too much on their homes and 30 years of deficit spending by the federal government. You can include the Clinton years in that, because even with a "balanced budget" the U.S. still managed to increase its debt load every year.

"BTW I cant post on the regular forums. If someone from Brownstoner TECH support can look into that."

Yep, I'm sure the Brownstoner staff will get right on that after months, if not years, of you calling them asshats and race baiters. But it is fun observing you grovel to get back onto a blog that you profess to hate.

" if not years, of you calling them asshats and race baiters."

Yep Biffie, stories about Marauding Teens and Homeless Black people taking dumps on stoops will do that to me.

"But it is fun observing you grovel to get back onto a blog that you profess to hate."

No Biff, I was being facetious. At this point in the Mutant Asset Bubble everything I told you is coming true. You see why it's not a good idea to meet in person. Just give it up the Great Depression 2 is underway.

I would like to see anybody refute my argument that we are in a Depression.

This story is for that Asshat Dave. Bank lending has seize world wide. Plus Hedge Funds are being slammed with margin calls. Everything is down and the Bail Out will do nothing to save us!

Libor Soars, Commercial Paper Slumps as Credit Freeze Deepens

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=avcUzkUD7vWs&refer=home

"The crisis deepened after the worst month for corporate credit on record. Leveraged loan prices plunged to all-time lows, short-term debt markets seized up and even the safest company debt suffered the worst losses in at least two decades. Credit markets have frozen as financial institutions hoard cash to meet future funding needs amid deepening concern that more banks will collapse."

I don't see anyone laughing any more, Asshats!

"I would like to see anybody refute my argument that we are in a Depression."

Charlie Rose asked Warren Buffet last night (you know...the richest man in the world) if we are in or are headed for a Depression and he said absolutely not. He said he thinks America's prospects for the future are tremendous.

Even if he were wrong, we made it through the first one, we made it through 2 world wars, we made it through 9/11 and we are still the greatest country in the world, by most accounts.

So do I believe a real estate broker in Lodi, New Jersey or Warren Buffet...?

Hmmm...that's a tough one...

Posted by: 11217 at October 2, 2008 12:32 PM

sigh....at the risk of giving you the kind of attention you crave I will make another honest effort to engage with you What. No matter what the source of your info over the last year (cut and paste or whatever) you have a good track record of predicting the specifics of the current collapse (predicting which institutions would go under etc). However, where you totally strike out is the human aspect of the equation. You seem to have no understanding of sociology or the dynamics of human interaction. No matter how much the economy tanks What, there will still be people like Biff or me, who you claim to hate without the slightest knowledge of what makes us tick, living our lives in Brooklyn and doing our best to enjoy our communities.

Politically I suspect you and I have a lot more in common than we do in opposition. I would bet anything that you and I have voted for the same presidential candidates for the last twenty years. The fact that you could perceive me as your enemy is beyond me and renders your POV useless as a tool that could edify anyone. Do you want a relevant voice? Learn to see your world in shades of grey my friend (and I will call you my friend no matter what you say). Nothing is as cut and dried as you seem to want it to be.

Posted by: wasder at October 2, 2008 12:38 PM

By the way, we're meeting in exactly 2 weeks, October 16 at 6:30pm at Union Hall. Remember your prediction that the war would end on that date and Brooklyn would have been taken back from all of us asshats? We're still here, son. And we're not giving up or going anywhere. Still have my job, still have my home. But you can take comfort in knowing you're the one responsible for bringing all of us bold-typed guests together; even if you're too afraid to show up and identify yourself. You're a keyboard terrorist and a cut and paste king. But if you feel like joining us on October 16, please do; you're as welcome as anyone else and it'll give you the opportunity to see for yourself that many of us are still laughing.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 2, 2008 12:39 PM

Buffet is also working really hard to prop up his buddies and his investments, wouldn't you say 11217? There are two or really a few ways of looking at what Buffet is doing right now, no?

Posted by: cobblehiller at October 2, 2008 12:40 PM

Those who blame the Bush administration for today's problems, please explain how Bush or his administration had anything to do with Main Street and Wall Street's irresponsible investments and dumb people taking on more than they can carry.

Posted by: mkop at October 2, 2008 12:40 PM

"I don't see anyone laughing any more, Asshats!"

I do a lot of laughing these days. And on October 16th I will join my friends here (and hopefully you to Teammate What) to laugh some more.

Posted by: wasder at October 2, 2008 12:44 PM

"Charlie Rose asked Warren Buffet last night (you know...the richest man in the world) if we are in or are headed for a Depression and he said absolutely not. He said he thinks America's prospects for the future are tremendous."

Wow wow wow! The leaders and other have been lying to America for years. Like "There are weapons of mass destruction in Iraq" or "Subprime mortgage problem is contained" or " This bail out bill will help main street".

Look if you want to smoke crack please leave me out of it but I think you statement has reinforce my argument that Americans are fucking retards!

Warren Buffet will make out like a bandit in the bail out. The bonds that Berkshire Hathaway hold will net billions for him! Why would he say anything else different? What you are going to tell me that Bill Gross is my friend now?

"So do I believe a real estate broker in Lodi, New Jersey or Warren Buffet...?"

Well my predictions are coming true 11217, there more pain ahead.

The What

Someday this war is gonna end...

Posted by: what at October 2, 2008 12:46 PM

Also, i think Depression may be taking it a little too far Teammate What. Certainly a bitch of a recession is upon us, and I wouldn't discount the possibility of a Depression I suppose, but to say that is here now is a leap of fairly gargantuan proportions. How will you ride out a Depression if it happens Comrade in Arms What?

See its much more fun to be on the same team.

Posted by: wasder at October 2, 2008 12:48 PM

I believe Warren Buffet will reap profits from the bailout, sure.

I also believe he cares more about America and it's people than you do, The What.

And that is far more admirable to me.

"Those who blame the Bush administration for today's problems, please explain how Bush or his administration had anything to do with Main Street and Wall Street's irresponsible investment"

We have a government that provided absolutely no oversight into the practices of wall street- in fact the Bush administration refused to enforce the regulation already on the books. Fannie and Freddie were sold worthless mortgage bonds which put them under. The top economists knew the bonds were worthless but Fannie and Freddie still had to take on those mortgage bonds. Now, Wall Street continued these unsafe practices because they knew they could unload most of them to the government- with they drank that well dry the chickens came home to roost.

This government could have put a stop to this two years ago by limiting the amount of repackages mortgages that Freddie and Fannie would accept. That would have got Wall Street in line very quickly. Instead this administration was too busy spending 10billion a month in Iraq, firing prosecutors, torturing people to give it much thought. And that is why they're also responsible for this.

Posted by: 7andfive at October 2, 2008 12:53 PM

"Oh BTW Everyone just glazed over the story about LIBOR"

I glaze over everything you write. Hard not to, when it's usually in either broken English or cut and pasted from the Associated Press.

Not a single person here believes they won't be affected by this. You making it seem like you are smarter and wiser only makes you seem all the more ignorant.

Anytime wasder! I appreciate your comments on all of these issues as well.

It's obvious by the What's lack of answering questions or any sense of goodwill towards other humans means (and hatred for this blog and many of it's posters) that the ONLY reason for his rants are to say "I told you so"

I personally find it disgusting, and I admit feeling guilty even engaging in this "conversation" in the first place.

He is a lowlife. Plain and simple. Doesn't matter that he predicted some of this news...I think anyone with half a brain saw this coming. I see nothing special about the What. Nothing at all.

Posted by: 11217 at October 2, 2008 1:13 PM

What, since you saw all this coming for so long, I trust you put your money where your mouth (or fingers) are and shorted all the financial institutions' stocks over the past 12 months. As such, I find it admirable that you're still here on the blog you despise rather than off sailing on your brand new 100 ft. yacht in the Riviera. Did you not make millions, if not billions, off your predictions? Oh yeah, you have to have money to make money. I forgot.

Fed May Lose Out on Bear Assets, Bank of America Says (Update1)

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory&refer=conews&tkr=BSC%3AUS&sid=akRlc4ks5mDc

"Oct. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Federal Reserve may lose as much as $6 billion on a portfolio of mortgage-backed assets it took over from Bear Stearns Cos., according to Bank of America Corp. analysts."

Guess who is gonna eat that? The US Tax slave!

``With the worsening in mortgage markets since last quarter, we estimate a range of $2 billion to $6 billion of unrealized losses,'' the New York-based analysts wrote."

This shit is worth zero!

"The U.S. Senate yesterday passed a $700 billion financial- market rescue package, which allows securities regulators to suspend asset-valuing rules that corporate executives blame for fueling the credit crisis."

22% approval rating for Bush, 15% for Congress, zero for Wall Street executives, but tell us oh wise, What...NOW it's ok to be mad at them now that you deem it ok?

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 2, 2008 2:18 PM

I love the tennis too but I recently bought Mariocart and it's BEYOND AMAZING!!! Highly recommend it...

Posted by: 11217 at October 2, 2008 2:22 PM

I hope you all saw this. Biden is no rocket scientist either:

“Criticising President George W. Bush's low-key response to the financial crisis, he [Senator Biden] recalled how, when
the stock market crashed in 1929, Franklin D. Roosevelt "got on the television" to say what was happening. There were two flaws in Mr. Biden's historical reference: Herbert Hoover was president at the time of the Great Crash and the television was not introduced to the US for another 10 years”.

From the FT yesterday

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 2, 2008 2:23 PM

Biff---so true! He can't possibly mean it but he serves that very positive function nonetheless.

11217--I don't own a wii but every time I play one I consider buying the system. I have heard many good things about the Mariocart.

Dave--that is funny and fairly lame of Biden for sure. I would still rather have him next to the big chair that that complete loon from Wasilla.

Posted by: wasder at October 2, 2008 2:28 PM

I agree wasder

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 2, 2008 2:32 PM

Some folks are hung up on "how" he expresses it, but What is describing the "what," a deflationary depression:

http://www.elliottwave.com/deflation/

Btw, there are key differences between the USv2008 and the largely agricultural society of 1832 or the baby industrial economy of the 30's with decades of growth ahead of it.

Posted by: bridges at October 2, 2008 2:40 PM

Dave, I must concede that I do have concerns about Biden as well. I would rather have a Clinton (either one), Kerry, Gore or Edwards matched against her, but I would have to think (hope) that someone who's been in politics as long as Biden has should be able to get the upper hand against Palin in a debate. This is going to be one hugely scrutinized discussion.

Posted by: Biff Champion at October 2, 2008 2:53 PM

Dave-you reckon McCain is regretting not picking Romney right about now?

Posted by: wasder at October 2, 2008 2:57 PM

Or anybody else for that matter...even Guiliani in a dress!!!

The sad thing about it all is that, in the unfortunate outcome that McCain/Palin win, they'll shut her up and lock her away and we won't even have the humorous anecdotes to laugh at whenever she opens her mouth.

My husband came in and said that's it, we have to get her in. I have been gaining her trust over the last month and finally got her this morning.

For those of you wondering In the midst of this major financial meltdown we added another mouth to feed named Lou. She's the black and white one the tabbies are the cats we already had that are pretty ticked off at the moment.

Man my cyber ears are burning...

"Wasder, how long have you been practicing Buddhism?" I wish Slopefarm. I can be impatient, mean and nasty just like anybody else, but thank you. In re the renovation, I am not doing it myself. Managing the job a little but that's it so plenty of time to hang with my team-mate the What. Thanks for nice words though. I am happy today for some reason.

East New York--the What is occasionally funny but that particular quote seemed a bit lacking.

What--what bullshit did you have to take on account of me? It is not affection I am looking for from you but a realization that many of the people you are trying to demonize are more on your team than you allow yourself to see. I have plenty of affection in my life from more appropriate sources.

Biff--this party is going to be sweet!!! What will be there for sure. Cobblehiller and Townhouse LAdy I am counting on you guys too. We should all have our "Hello My Name is...." tags on. You guys are all awesome.

Name tags might be a good idea. It gets quite loud in there, and I'd hate to have to keep shouting "Montrose Morris, yeah, I really am Montrose Morris" all night.

This should be fun.

THL- I understand exactly how you got suckered in. From personal experience. If it has big oogley eyes, body hair and fish breath, I'm a goner. Gads! I just described 1/2 the people I know!
