new-ish poster here from park slope would like to say hi!

hello! anyway long time lurker here but decided to sign up today cuz i plan to come to the happy hour on the 16th..

i just moved to park slope from harlem in july and honestly, i f'ing love it. i really didnt think i would at all. things aren't as cheap as they were in harlem, but i guess as long as i dont go crazy things will be okay (bitter renter here yes. with my finances, i will never own. at least not in nyc)

anyway, i just wanted to say hi and that i enjoy a lot of your posts and i used to read this blog waaaay before i even thought of moving to brooklyn. i sorta wound up in park slope by luck. it was either harlem again or bushwick for me.

my fav. part of park slope is that everyone leaves free shit on their stoops!!! LOVE IT! i've gotten so much great shit that people leave. i pretty much furnished my entire bedroom with the free stuff people have thrown out. (okay that probably sounds gross, sorry).

nice to meet all of you! if you ever see someone on 5th ave and 1st street walking a pitbull and a beagle, it could be me (or my roommate actually. or our dog walker.. hmm) well see you on the 16th!

-rob

ps.. can anyone suggest any restaurants in the area that aren't really overpriced but still a nice place to take someone? like if youre on a budget... maybe no more than 20 bux per person.

Welcome to Brooklyn, Rob!

Don't pick up any street mattresses dude -- bedbugs!

I haz--you were the only person I was waiting to hear from on my house post yesterday that didn't weigh in. How are you?

Posted by: wasder at October 10, 2008 11:36 AM

I'm so sorry Wasder! I had a crazy busy day yesterday at the office. All's well. Your house is so lovely -- I love the elegant bones and can see so much potential for beauty and comfort there! I'm looking forward to following the progress here, and particularly to seeing what your clever wife does with the space. :) Hope all is good with you guys.

PitBull --

As for cheap restaurant recommendations have you tried Aunt Suzy's on 5th between Garfield and 1st?

It's where I go when I don't feel like cooking and want a glass of wine but don't feel like $$.

Just old school Italian been around a long time. I like the old advertising posters on the wall and the fact that the family photos they display are real family, not from the flea market...

Food is OK (but it's no Al Di La) and the service is friendly.

Posted by: phripley at October 10, 2008 12:29 PM

oooh i havent tried there yet even tho i pass it everyday. is that place that has like free pasta every thursday or something? or is that another place...? i havent dared tried al di la yet. im too trash-ay. i will say that pizza place near the R union st stop on 4th ave has some of the best pizza ive ever had anywhere.

was reading yesterday the thread about lookout hill having closed.. that was one of the first places i tried out when i first moved here.. it wasnt so good (the mac and cheese was really good tho. but how hard is it to fuck up mac and cheese?). but my palette is non-existent for the most part so i cant really judge a place like others can.

im definitely gonna try out aunt suzies! thanks!

(dont laugh.) but are there any dollar stores around in park slope? i guess i should explore more ill probably find one.. but i love my dollar stores! of course a neighborhood doesnt need like 20 of them on one block like my old hood had, but i think having one is always good to get cheap stuff all in one place.

Pitbull...Atlantic Ave in Bed Stuy is jam packed with dollar stores. Take the A train to Utica (and see the nice part of Bed Stuy) and then walk back west on Atlantic.

Welcome to the neighborhood! You picked a great one!!

There are a number of dollar stores on 5th Avenue below 9th Street. That area has some real bargains.

For cheap eats, also try Bonnie's Grill on 5th. Press 195 on 5th is also great. There is a cheap Thai place that just opened on 5th also...can't recall the name, but it's up near Lincoln or thereabouts.

Five Guys Burgers up on 7th Avenue is great also!!

Enjoy...this will be a great weekend to explore...supposed to be terrific weather. The Park is going to be gorgeous this weekend...leaves are just starting to change.

Make sure you check out the Greenmarket up at Grand Army Plaza tomorrow, if you can. Every Saturday...

cool thanks dave and 11217. are you guys going to meet up on the 16th? 11217 are you the person who suggested that a keils(sp?) open up in park slope? i remember lol'ing at that for some reason.

Yes, that was me. I know it's probably never going to happen...especially in this economy...but I can still dare to dream! Crazier things have happened...

I won't be there on the 16th unfortunately...my co-op meeting beckons that night.

Posted by: 11217 at October 10, 2008 1:49 PM

booooo skip the meeting!

Posted by: PitbullNYC at October 10, 2008 2:02 PM

Try Peppinos on 5th for the best pizza in the Slope.

Red Hot II on 7th ave has the best Chinese food.

Load up on the appetizers at Zilli (Turkish) or Nana (pan-Asian).

Good brunches can be found at Bar Toto, Miriam and Bogota.

Lobo is good for Tex-Mex, and Rachel's for burritos.

Fifth Avenue restaurant and Daisy's are decent diners.

Fatoosh on 5th has good Middle Eastern.

Watana on 7th has excellent Thai.

There are many more, but that should get you started.

I'll be curious what you think of Aunt Suzie's. Many people like it, but I thought is was pretty awful.

thanks for the suggestions! :)

thanks for the suggestions! :)

one more question.. how about bars? are there any other gay bars other than excelsior and cattyshack in the area (lol i broke the stripper pole at amateur gogo night a few weeks ago. dont ask me HOW i was convinced to enter the contest. maybe it was the 100 dollar prize. clearly i didnt win). or any bars really.. i actually havent been to union hall yet..

Snarkslope...don't forget, best chocolate cupcakes -
Chocolate Room (fyi - you can't order more than 6 at a time, and yes, I've tried, It was one of those days)

Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 10, 2008 2:42 PM

Rob...those are basically the only gay bars in the neighborhood besides, Ginger's which is a lesbian bar.

Gays also hang at Union Hall (I love that place) and The Gate, as well as others.

Park Slope, while having a substantial gay population, doesn't have a ton of gay bars (if you hang around long enough, you'll see that some of us constantly beg for more!) but having said that, most bars in the neighborhood are very welcoming and gay friendly.

I also like Commonwealth, Beer Table, sometimes Patio Lounge and Barn, next to Flatbush Farm.

Good bars up on Vanderbilt are a plenty too...I really like Weather Up and I hear Barette just started a "Queer night" last Sunday, which they plan to continue once a month, I think. Never been.

I also really want to try Franklin Park, the new beer garden type place over on Franklin Ave...
