Mobile Phone Reception in PS Brownstones

A constant/recurring undercurrent in cell phone discussions/complaints in Park Slope is the extremely poor reception people get within their own brownstone apartments.

I did a quick search to see if this item has been discussed before and came up short.

Thus, does anyone have any recommendations about which service providers fare better (or worse) in this area? My contract with T-Mobile has expired and I am seeking to switch b/c of the extremely poor connectivity within and near, my apartment.

Many thanks in advance. Cheers - MFB

I live in a floor-through on 3rd St in Park Slope and use Verizon as my cell carrier. I only get service if I'm standing at a window. If we didn't have a land line it would be a real pain.

My Verizon service is pretty reliable in PS....

I have AT&T and live on the 3rd floor of a brownstone in the north slope. I only get tolerable reception while near a window.

It's annoying.

I have at&t and live in a garden level apartment in the North Slope and have full bars anywhere in my place, even no where near the windows...

Plus the new Iphone is AMAZING!

We have Sprint and have no problems with reception - lower duplex of a brownstone.

When we were in a floor through PS brownstone coop apartment before I used to joke the roof of the building must be made of solid lead. Beause nobody could get a signal in there. But often I couldn't get a signal inside restaurants and other buildings in Park Slope either. I had Cingular and my husband had Verizon. Verizon got the best signal inside the Park Slope building. Though it still wasn't strong. I had Sprint at first. Sprint is the worst in NYC. Not just in Park Slope but many times all over the city somebody else with another carrier would have a full signal and I'd have none at all. It was ridiculous. I tried to find out from Cingular back then why the service was so bad in Park Slope but they had no answers. It's a mystery.

If you spend a lot of time in Prospect Park, DO NOT get Sprint. There is almost no coverage there. I had Sprint for over 10 years before just recently switching to AT&t. I'm much happier now.

Does anyone know how much influence your phone has on reception?

Can two people with the same service get significantly different reception just because one of them has a better phone?

northsloperenter may be raising a v valid point; the comments above seem to indicate that different folks have various degrees of success with the same provider. It seems that one's connectivity will depend on a fortunate (or well researched) combination of hardware and service.

I was leaning toward AT&T/Cingular b/c of the iPhone, but the stories about quality of reception have truly been a mixed bag...

I wrote in earlier but have to add that my Verizon phone will show full bars anywhere in my apartment, but unless I am standing at a window the reception will fade in and out. My husband has Verizon too and his phone (a different type than mine) has the same problem.

I had verizon 5-6 years ago and it was awful. I had Sprint 3-4 years ago and it was tolerable, but as you moved into the interior of the house, the signal dropped off. Now I have ATT and get pretty good coverage everywhere in the house. Maybe it's just the iphone though...

i had t-mobile and didn't get reception in about 1/4 of the house
just switched to AT&T: bars everywhere

Our T-Mobile and Sprint cell phone reception doesn't work at all when the computer is on and it works just fine when the computer is off. We have Cablevision on the computer modem, cable TV, and a cable phone. No wireless network yet. How's that for weird?
