Insulating crawlspace - savings?

I've read about folks who insulated their crawlspace. I'm thinking about doing the job. My question is for those who've done the work already - What kind of energy savings did you notice (cost of heating/cooling before and after)?

Comments

Just did it last winter so don't know the actual savings yet but I noticed a change in the temperature of the top floor within a day or two of the installation.

As an alternative, you can also encapsulate your crawl space installing a sturdy vapor barrier to completely isolate the house from the ground.

This way the crawl space becomes part of the house "envelope" and energy savings can be significant. iIt also adds moisture protection, protecting your floor joists and insulation from mold.

Advanced Energy and Habitat for Humanity performed several studies on crawl space encapsulation and energy efficiency, which can be seen at this website:
http://www.crawlspaces.org

Energy savings can be of 16% or more. If you have ducts running through the crawl space, energy losses of an open crawl space can be as high as 36%.

EPA website also has great information on crawl space moisture control and energy efficiency.

big difference for me, I just used the rolls of insulation from home depot, nothing fancy. It was totally worth it, I'm sure I already saved the $300 I spent on the insulation.

Have you heard of Cleanspace?

Typically 20-30% savings in heating/cooling costs.

Check it at http://www.wet-basement-waterproofing.com/products2/cleanspace/.

Remember, if your insulation gets wet (from condensation or high humidity levels) - it will lose its R value and provide little to no value. Cleanspace can prevent this, and help with costs!

will unrolling insullation work on a crawlspace under the roof? If so, does anyone know where I can find someone to do this for me?
