End of the World (Or Maybe Not) Party
Hmmmm. What happened? I woke up this morning and realized I'm still alive. And I still have my home. And I still have my job. And I see many other of my cherished fellow 'Stoners around too. There's daveinbedstuy, dittoburg, SnarkSlope, TownhouseLady, PitBullNYC, z, and even Mr. B himself posting today. I thought October 16th was it for all of us. But since we still have another 13+ hours to go, let's try to get through this together and continue with our plans to meet tonight at 6:30pm (or drop by later if you can't make that time) at Union Hall in Park Slope.

Biff - you sound like a nice guy. But there's a bunch of you out there that just like to hear yourselves speak. I have a hunch that many readers find that boring.

I love you Biff, no really. You give me reason cheer the Asshat demise! The hight you go the farther you fall...
LAID OFF & LINING UP FOR WORK
THOUSANDS OF GRIM-FACED NYERS AT CHELSEA JOB FAIR
http://www.nypost.com/seven/10162008/news/regionalnews/laid_off__lining_up_for_work_133846.htm
"Careerbuilder.com job-fair organizers said a diverse crowd of about 2,300 - many the victims of layoffs - crammed the event hoping for a break.
Each of the 40 booths inside the Metropolitan Pavilion on West 18th Street had a stack of résumés on the table and a line of hopefuls.
"It was the busiest event of the year so far," said Careerbuilder.com spokeswoman Jennifer Grasz.
On a day that saw the Dow dive another 733 points, more than 100 former employees of collapsed Wall Street titan Lehman Brothers found themselves lining up for more than an hour."

PitbullNYC...I think we should form a street gang...the Asshats or Fucktards. We can all wheel around shopping carts that we've stolen. OOpps, sorry, cross threading here.
I'd like to meet some Pretty Boy Goonies myself.

Um, The What, the point was just that: to have people view both my forum post AND yours. I know it's a difficult concept for you. Please stop cutting and pasting for just one moment or so and try to understand others. But unfortunately, since your Forum post was taken down, I guess that just leaves me here. Oh well...

We could never form a gang, as we'd kill each other over the appliances to have in our gang house.

I_haz_TWO_toilets, thank you for your confirmation! I'm so happy to see you also have made it. Let's just hope Montrose Morris, bxgrl, cobblehiller, wasder, slopefarm, 11233, Bob Marvin, rh, denton, cmu, johnife, et.al. also check in so we know they're accounted for.
Regarding the gang thing: how about a twist on West Side Story? Instead of Maria, can we sing, in honor of your two bathrooms, "I just met a toilet named TOTO..."?
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 16, 2008 11:03 AM
LOL @ toiletz. true true. if a low grade bidet is good enough for the DDP members, then it's good enough for me. actually i have never in my life seen a real life bidet and actually find them rather gross. how exactly is sprinkling some water on your butthole going to clean it!?

PitbullNYC, you're heading into a very dark territory with your comments!
"I love it....Biff beats the What."
BRG, it's not a competition. After all, it's hardly fair to compare the 30+ folks coming out to a bar conveniently located in Park Slope to however many individuals The What could get to gather at the Thirsty Toad in Lodi.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 16, 2008 11:24 AM
Sorry PitbullNYC, just a bad joke. Anyway, I remember being in Europe as a child seeing a bidet for the first time in person and wondering what an odd looking drinking fountain it was. And why it would be in a bathroom. Fortunately I wasn't thirsty at the time and my parents explained what it's really used for!

This obsession with the What has gone too far. The man or woman was for the most part right about his predictions. Dave for some crazy reason can't even admit that. Even the owner of this blog has said he's been right. And at this point, if we started a pool I would side with the What with his/her prediction that the trading will be halted at least once before the end of the year.
Now, I even took some of the What's advice on getting rid of my Euros- that's already paying off. Now people either take his advice or move on- nothing to see here except your housing prices falling.
Posted by: 7andfive at October 16, 2008 11:28 AM
"Bars in Massachusetts close at 1:00."
And they shut down the subway in Boston *before* they close the bars. It's some weird Puritan thing they have going on.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at October 16, 2008 11:30 AM
STILL ALIVE! In fact I am ecstatic this morning. The last debate was hurdled by man Barack and all is smooth sailing into the election. The indian summer weather is cheering my soul and my house is nearly ready for me to occupy. So yes, it is October 16th and I feel fine.
But really the point of all of this for me, as stated previously, is that through thick or thin we need to stick together and keep our neighborhoods and communities strong. Gatherings like tonight's will probably be even more necessary than ever if things go downhill economically as they appear to be doing. As somebody not connected in any way to financial services, I must say that my take on the state of the economy vis a vis Brooklyn is more nuanced than many. I know we are in for hard times but I also know that there are so many amazing people living in Brooklyn that we will survive and thrive.

7andFive--do you think that the What would be a more effective spokesman for the economic apocalypse if he/she could uncouple their predictions from simplistic, reductionist sociological analyses? I for one think so. I have given props where props were do in re seeing ahead to the collapse of the investment banking industry but certainly hanging this development on the readers of this blog is stupid and beyond defense, no?
Posted by: wasder at October 16, 2008 11:39 AM
Man, that's my second nomination for Borough President. If Marty Markowitz were not my Facebook friend (he really is) then I might throw my hat in the ring. Doesn't being a total pothead disqualify me from higher office though?
Posted by: wasder at October 16, 2008 11:41 AM
Yes, still alive, Biff. Thanks for the concern. Sorry, I thought it sufficient to check in by responding to what's way-out-of-line comment on summer covers (WTF?????). But here I am. I will check in this evening to confirm my survival as the world's end draws ever closer.

My cats woke me up this morning, as per usual. Their need for food supercedes all else, be it economic or political.
I did go to bed happy that Obama will be our next president, if last night was any indication. It was rather sad to see McCain implode, but he brought it on himself.

"if he/she could uncouple their predictions from simplistic, reductionist sociological analyses?" Wasder your correct the What has absolute zero social skills- at least on the web.
It's funny that now the What is becoming the voice of reason on this blog. The mere fact that some took literally Oct 16th as the day of reckoning says enough. Yes, we are all still alive but many have seen there 401K wiped out, jobs lost, company out of business and banks on the verge of collapse. The What told of this scenario many months ago and many laughed him off. Now, instead of coming out and saying he was right and group of people want to celebrate that we weren't knocked off the planet by an apocalyptic attack?

DOW--if you are not The What, perhaps you can speak for your wing of the blog here (the everything can be reduced to economics wing of the blog) and explain to me why why WHY everything has to revolve around stocks and banks and property values. Everything you write is about this. Brownstoner for me is a place to discuss a wide variety of "living in Brooklyn" issues. How is it that your worldview has been reduced to your narrow focus? Given the way you align yourself with What and given the fact that What doesn't answer questions put to him I will take your answer as at least partially in line with his theoretical answer. (I did enjoy your youtube clip though--definitely lessons to be learned).
But really, don't you (or What) have anything else going on in your life? Or do you really reduce everything to stock and real estate values?
Posted by: wasder at October 16, 2008 1:40 PM
7andfive, for me, and I suspect many others, it isn't even a matter of disputing or not disputing The What's predictions. We heard his message the first time and got his point. His constant, over-the-top, psychotic, homophobic rantings are what I respond to, and I enjoy doing it. I don't dispute or even address the economic aspects of his posts because I've done everything I can to try to secure my future and there's no value in reading his rehashes of information I can easily get myself on various financial websites. Just because we're having a gathering to meet other posters we like does not mean we're in denial. wasder often explains this rationally - see I don't understand why you and others like you don't get it.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 16, 2008 1:40 PM

Am I the only one smart enough to call The What on his bullshit? He blabbed about a "Mutant Real Estate Bubble" for months, but only when the stock market started tanking did he start talking about a "Mutant Asset Bubble". It's good to follow the market What, but don't act like you were predicting armageddon when the housing market was tanking and the stock market was still soaring.

7andFive--sorry I must have missed your earlier response.
cobblehiller--there are definitely shades of grey, something I have tried to point out many times in re What's reductionist rantings. I should have been more careful in my wording perhaps as I am not trying to get people to choose sides so much as look at the sum total of what What says and see his social theorizing as the ridiculous bullshit it is. I very much respect your ability to appreciate the What on his predictive level but I suspect you must agree with me that there is much more to life than what he writes about, and certainly more to people than the value of their houses or stock portfolios. DOW8000 is an especially heinous poster in that he seems to go out of his way to goad and twist the knife and I was trying to get him to articulate what else he cares about in life.
Posted by: wasder at October 16, 2008 2:39 PM
Darkstar you have officially been welcomed by the What
Posted by: daveinbedstuy at October 16, 2008 2:46 PM
Darkstar: You are right. He did change his POV as the circumstances changed.
7andfive: One thing you (and What) don't address is the What's own involvement in the housing market. The What readily admits he was part of the "system" that gave out home loans. If we believe what he says, he made it possible for people to buy into the mutant bubble (real estate or otherwise). He nows says it is all over and everyone will be ass-raped.
When I call him on his enabling behavior, he says no one he helped is underwater. Nice try, but if we are to beleive him, the What - soothsayer of all things finance related - knowingly sold people assets/real estate that he knew would have no value in the coming end of the world as we know it.
There is no way to reconcile that fact that he made a living from the mutant bubble run up, knew all along that it was a sham and now stands on the sidelines and says we all deserve it. Was he an evil person while he was selling home loans? He probably doesn't think so and he may not have been. But he was part of the problem and now he takes no responsibility. You can't have it both ways.
Posted by: 11233 at October 16, 2008 2:52 PM
I guess The What doesn't know the difference between Real Estate and Assets. Maybe he thinks he was always talking about the same thing.
Posted by: DarkStar at October 16, 2008 2:53 PM
"The world has not come to an end but out way of life has......"
My way of life has not come to an end and there aren't too many circumstances that would make it come to an end. My way of life is about living in Brooklyn and raising my kids and seeing my friends. Nothing that happens in the economy will change that.
And 7andFive--I don't think you answered my question. Insulting, threatening and demeaning is not "lack of social skills" it is psychopathic, dehumanizing vileness. Don't excuse this behavior because he made some good predictions. I will continue to comment that it is obvious that What was quite insightful about the banking system but this in no way excuses or invalidates the way that he has used this information to threaten and demean other readers on this blog. comment about that if you will.

"But really, don't you (or What) have anything else going on in your life? Or do you really reduce everything to stock and real estate values?"
I can't speak for The What. I have a lot going on (great marriage, beautiful baby daughter, satisfying career, God's blessings, etc.). I used to be oblivious to the markets yet drawn to the allure of brownstones. But when I started shopping for a brownstone in Bed Stuy back in 2004, it didn't take me long to realize that we were in a bubble (standoffish brokers, bidding wars, shifty offer acceptances, etc.). Having took an L in Nasdaq 2000, I vowed not to participate. I could have made money but hindsight is 20/20. I expected the bubble to burst in '05 or '06. I was wondering where the hell people were getting all this money from to bid so high on all these listings. So I did a little digging and came accross a few doom and gloom blogs (thehousingbubbleblog, stock-market-crash.net, etc.) that spelled everything out for me. It was all a pyramid/ponzi/number's racket mathematically destined to fail like all other bubbles throughout history. I refused to participate. I was hellbent, and still am, on saving, waiting and striking during the fire sale.
I like true crime. I especially like true white-collar crime like scams, swindles and mutant asset bubbles. The psychology of crowds, sheep herd behavior and greed is extremely fascinating to me. It's like those MLM rallys. So that's why I became so obsessed with the markets, their history and their fraud. We never learn.
But the same can be said about you. Do you have a life outside of brownstoner? You're always here. I have a 9 to 5 and can only comment during breaks or at home where I have another 9 to 5 (raisin' the lil' crumbsnatcher, time-consuming like a 9 to 5 even with the working wife).
I'll continue to rant (now laugh because Armeggeddon is closer and closer) about the markets and RE prices until I finally purchase a brownstone for what I think it's worth, not what the Jones's are paying for them (or if I can no longer hold off wifey). Then we can talk about crown moldings, wainscotting, etc and the nabes they define. But you read a off-market comment from me every now and then. I comment about the restaurants of the days.
So you like that video, huh? Biff's get-together is very reminiscent of the end of that clip. Everybody just partying away, oblivious about what's to come. Like What says, "they don't see that bat approaching their dome piece", or something to that effect. Not saying people shouldn't get together to celebrate life day to day, but the mockery of this "End Of The World" reality (not the end per se but definitely the end of our comfortable standard of living for quite some time) invites my teasing.
Have fun tonight! I have an awards dinner to attend but I might sneak by afterwards to spy on ya'll. Describe yourselves, all of you.

DOW--thank you, sincerely. It makes me feel better about you to know something about your life. It is doubtful that you and I would have too much in common if we met socially (although beautiful baby daughter, great marriage and satisfying career sound familiar) but I truly appreciate that you took the opportunity to expound a little about something other than how fucked we all are.
At the same time this statement ("Everybody just partying away, oblivious about what's to come") is just not true. There are very few people here (sebb excluded) who are not cognizant of the problems we face. But what can any of us do about it? I can't fix the credit markets, I can't get competent people into regulatory jobs, etc. But I can be a good neighbor, an interested friend, and somebody who is interesting to talk to. These things I can control. The point of the party is not to deny the problems but to celebrate the fact that despite everything here we are on October 16, 2008 able to enjoy ourselves and each other's company. What is there to do but laugh when somebody like the What suggests that somehow I am to blame for this problem. I do hope you can come.
As for me, yes I spend a lot of time here because I feel like I have tapped into a community of people who are worth knowing. I am self employed and work in a field where I have very intense work for a few days (and then you don't see me here) or very mellow periods (where you see me here constantly).
And really, thanks for writing what you did. I know longer think you are such a heinous freak.

cobblehiller--I will see you tonight. I have a feeling we will have a good conversation about this. I am not a concern fascist if that is what you fear. I really do see things in shades of grey, almost exclusively in fact, so I am sorry that I came across as so dogmatic. As you will see I have complimented and appreciated DOW's response to my post and have removed the "especially heinous" tag from my estimation of him.

DOW, I no longer think you are The What, but you do share an incredible lack of understanding with respect to the intention of our get together. wasder, thank you for saving me the time to have to explain this again. It seems some just don't get it no matter how many times we try to drill it in. I think we've tried our best but now I'm no longer interested in explaining it. Let's just all go and have a good time!
Turtlejam19, welcome. Try not to be too late as we've been warned by Union Hall that it will be very busy tonight. Look forward to seeing you.

"At the same time this statement ("Everybody just partying away, oblivious about what's to come") is just not true."
You're right, wasder. I was a little over-the-top. The fact that you guys (You, Dave, Biff and others) are regulars on What's threads says something. You know (or you're at least worried about it) we're in a deep and darkening recession that might turn into a Greater Depression. I guess I was just poking fun. Like calling you underwasder. I don't REALLY wish harm on you.
Why'd you have to soften me up? Now I'm not compelled to go at you anymore.

Sorry if this posts twice but I just had some weird thing happen and I don't think it went through the first time.

I've been called a TROLL by The What. Is that the pot calling the kettle black or what?
Please notice that he didn't try to refute my statement that he only started talking about a "Mutant Asset Bubble" after the stock market started nose-diving. There is only one "Mutant Ass" here, and he goes by the name "The What".
Posted by: DarkStar at October 16, 2008 3:38 PM
DarkStar, you'll quickly see that The What will avoid the tough questions, although he'll hound you to answer all of his.
DOW, this is getting really creepy, but I also am feeling less antagonistic towards you, which is partly why I stopped with the DOWhat references and have tried to keep things more civil. Unlike The What, I think you probably are a decent person. And I'm not certain what motivates The What, but at least can appreciate in your case you trying to secure a good home in a nice neighborhood for your family and sincerely do wish you the best. (I feel so dirty!)
Ok, on to THL's home!
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 16, 2008 3:48 PM
Don't let it get to you Darkstar. next comes Asshat and Fucktard.

THL - I want to thank you for not selecting a house in Bay Ridge today.
Scarlet O'Hara can make a great dress with those curtains.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 16, 2008 3:52 PM
THL, I've viewed the home and must say you are getting better and better with each day. I could not stand to see this one lost on the back pages of Brownstoner in the Forum and am hereby begging you to save it and repost it when the discussion stalls during the next House of the Day feature on the front page of the blog. It's just too late and there are posters I'm sure who would love to have at this one!
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 16, 2008 3:53 PM
Same here wasder, we'll talk!
Thanks DOW. Wish you were coming to the event, would be good to meet you!
I'm not so interesting, being from Cobble Hill is probably the most interesting thing about me in this circle.
Ok, signing off...see some of you later!
Posted by: cobblehiller at October 16, 2008 3:55 PM
DOW--right on. I may well be underwasder at some point and I will have to deal with that. I don't think so because I bought a cheap house (comparatively speaking of course) for Clinton Hill but I am certainly not under the impression that it would be impossible for the value to drop so much as to be underwater. And yes, something bad is going down, but I maintain that the only thing I can do constructively is participate in my community.
I also wish you no harm. Now, lets get back to being mildly antagonistic, but still respectful, internet opponents. HAha

BRG, you just had to start us off, didn't you.
Ok, I suppose we can have a bit of fun with this one in the Forum. On an unusual starting note for a Mill Basin Mansion, would it have killed the owners/Agent to wind up the garden hose before taking the snaps of the backyard?
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 16, 2008 3:57 PM
Oh for crying out loud! If DOW and Wasder have a group hug, I'm leaving! Oh wait, I am leaving...now!
Posted by: cobblehiller at October 16, 2008 4:01 PM
Yeah, Biff, I had to start something. But you're right, let's hold off. It's too good and so late in the day.
I can't post anymore for the day. I'm dealing with DOB hell right now. If the What is right and the world is ending, I hope the DOB goes first.
See you all later.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at October 16, 2008 4:02 PM
Did you catch the photo of the agent?
And am I the only one that is wondering why they choose a silver table with all of the gold leaf frames hanging on the walls of the living room?
The plus is the bathroom has both a tub AND a walk in shower for Dave.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 16, 2008 4:05 PM
BRG, thanks. I'm logging off soon too so this beauty will have to have it's moment in the sun another time.
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 16, 2008 4:05 PM
Hey everyone, have a great time tonight!
I'll catch you at the next one!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 16, 2008 4:06 PM
THL - That was majestic. I think my eyes are bleeding.
Posted by: SnarkSlope at October 16, 2008 4:07 PM
No Snark, that's not blood you're seeing...the furniture is actually all rose colored.
Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 16, 2008 4:10 PM
THL, at least there's nothing shady looking about the agent...
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 16, 2008 4:15 PM
Nope, nothing shady at all...go..have fun...
You better catch me up on everything tomorrow!
Posted by: TownhouseLady at October 16, 2008 4:18 PM
If I don't get attacked by a mob of former faded type guests before that!
Posted by: Biff Champion at October 16, 2008 4:20 PM
are lurking apartment-coveters allowed?
Posted by: carrollista at October 16, 2008 5:11 PM
Home in one piece, even after a few stop off points. Had a lot of fun tonight.
Posted by: Adam Dahill at October 17, 2008 1:38 AM
did it turn into a pub crawl?
Posted by: dittoburg at October 17, 2008 8:38 AM
Good to meet so many Brownstoner regulars.
The place was pretty crowded when I left early, at 8:30.
Posted by: Bob Marvin at October 17, 2008 8:39 AM
Adam, ditto, Bob, I created a final recap Forum post today if you care to comment there. Thanks!
