Drain Pipe in backyard
My brownstone is almost 100 years old, and my neighbors attached bdlg. is the sister to mine. Bdlgs. were once owned by same owner who put the drain pipe for my bdlg on my neighbors. My neighbor is now asking me to move the drain pipe (the one that leads from the roof to whatever source) because he plans renovations. Sounds costly, & after 100 years why now? Do I have to?

You should check with a real estate attorney, however, it might be in the interests of good neighbor relations to come to an accommodation with your neighbor, especially if you plan to continue to reside in your home for the foreseeable future. If your attorney tells you that you do indeed have to remove the pipe, do it and count yourself fortunate that you weren't made to do it earlier. If your attorney tells you that you do not have to move it, tell your neighbor this, and offer to split the cost of moving the pipe with them, and if they won't agree, don't move the pipe.

If you need to move the pipe it would usually come down the back of the house, into the ground and into the basement to hook up with the existing soil pipe/sewer line. If its a 3 storey two family or smaller I believe all those connections can be made with PVC and not cast iron.

I think having the drain pipe on the adjacent building is standard. All the houses in our backyard have neighbors' downspouts.

That's the way it looks to me as well. All the pipes appear to be on the adjacent buildings. I don't want to get into a tiff w/ my long time neighbors, nor do I feel inclined to spend a bunch of $$$$

do you have someone else's pipe on your house?

Yes, I have the pipe of the bdlg. next to mine which , also, at one time, was owned by same party. He had 3 bdlgs. in a row. I'm in Boerum Hill, and when I stand in my backyard it looks as if most of the bdlgs are set up this way.
