Water/Sewer Bill. What is yours?
What is your quarterly water/sewer bill? My quarterly bill has been averaging about $170. I live alone with my wife and I would say that we don't use any more water than the average person.
Does this seem correct?
Thanks...

I have a family of 4 with 3 bathrooms, and a dishwasher and washing machine I use daily. My water bill is approx. $46 ever 3 months.

We have a single family house with 2 adults + 2 kids and come right out at that $170 per quarter. That's up from about $150 per quarter before the recent water rate hike.
If you're water use is up inexplicably try this test. Turn the valvles off for all your toilets, sinks etc. Then go down to your basement and see if your water meter is still turning. If it is, you have some small leaks somewhere.

Giovanna, that is extremely low for a family of 4 on the water bill. I have 4 adults in the household, laundry every week and my last bill was $175. I think we used approx. 190gal a day from what I can remember on the bill.

I find Giovanna's claim mighty hard to believe. Your sewer charge is always 159% of your water charge (never been able to figure that one out!). As of July 2007, you are charged $2.02 per Hundred Cubic Feet, which they say is equivalent to 748 gallons of water. There is a minimum charge, even if no water is ever used. It used to be .27 per day - but I think it's now up past .30. So taking the .27 X 90 days = $24.30 just for water...plus the 159% = $62.43 total bill if you never use a drop of water.
I think if you are getting bills for $170 in New York City, you're doing very well.
We have a 2 family house, total of 3 bathrooms, 2 high efficiency dishwashers and a front loading washing machine and our annual water/sewage bill last year came close to $1,800.

Correction. Looking at my water bill online. Last quarter was $128 @ 194gal a day and the quarter before is $167 @ 262gal a day.

Parkslopemom, right about g's low figure, but I wonder about your own. Mine, 4 adults+1 10yrold, 2 washing machines, roughly $150/qtr. Yours is 3x as much? There's something wrong there, it's way too high.

cmu: Now you have me worried. A back check shows that we have used between 330 and 390 HCF's per year since 1998. We're a two family brownstone, with 6 adults and one child. Two kitchens, three bathrooms, one washer and a garden (plants need watering). My quarterly bills show a range of 90 - 120 HCF's. What are other two family brownstone's showing as their HCF use per bill?

Mine is approx $125 a quarter. 3 apts. 5 adults total (only 1 female though) living there. With washing machine in building.

I am so glad that you asked this question. I let the Water people in to inspect the meter. I was told that it was a $50 fine if it was not done. I thought, okay, I'll avoid the fine. My meter was off and they billed me with the adjustments for $2700 last month. The previous month was $138.

According to wiki, average water use in NYC was almost 200 gals/per day, which to me seems outrageous. Otoh, yours;
738x350 / 365 = 720 gals/day = / 6 = 120 per person.
Mine (even with garden) is more like 60 gals/person/day. May account for the disparity between my bill of $135 (I rechecked my last bill) and yours of $300. Do you have the old 3-gal toilets? Use (an old) d/w once a day or more? Have a top-loader washing machine (20 gal) instead of a front loader (7gal)? Low flow shower heads? All these make a difference.

I'm a single person living alone. I do a couple of loads of laundry a week & some gardening water but I'm careful overall about water usage. My gallon use averages 52 to 75 per day (around $67 per quarter) depending a lot on whether I have houseguests.
I also pay water bills for a 2-unit apartment. I don't have the usage figures but quarterly payment is around $200. & there are 4 adults (w/ dishwasher & washing machines) in the building.
