Before you start mainlining brownstone restoration porn (sorry for the mixed metaphor), brace yourself for what's involved. Look at the renovation blogs here for some really good representative before/during/after photos and description. Also go through the brownstoner archives for the parlor kitchen series and bathroom reno series. Gaze all you want at whatever pretty pictures you find, but don't delude yourself.

Depends. If you mean the dark, gloomy, wood-encrusted interiors with a deadly chandelier that reminds me of a funeral parlor and are considered authentic brownstone, HOTD listings on this site (particularly those with more than 50 comments) would be a good place to start.
A much better interpretation that might cost you your firstborn:

But for my money, I'd look at Fine Homebuilding, etc to get fresh ideas. Paint the woodwork white for a start and install light colored bamboo flooring.

Lot of negativity out there. We finished our project last year and are so happy in our renovated/restored home. It took us over a year but was worth it. My favorite inspiration by far is house tours, but they are usually in the spring. The other thing you can do is go to open houses of the better homes (more expensive) in BH, PS, etc. Walking thru the houses is the best way to get a feel for what works, what you like, etc. For online, I think the suggestion to look at real estate pix is a good idea, and I think the Old House Journal may have pictures on its site. Bringing one of these old houses back to its original (or slightly updated) glory is a great journey and I wish you luck on it.

I admit to be an open house slut - great way to see some real homes. Online real estate listings are another way but not quite as good as seeing something in person.
Flickr is another great source to find photos of just about anything.

My before and after shots are posted on flickr, but now I'm scared gkw won't approve.

Wow, gkw, that's a pretty strong statement, especially considering the amount of work that went into that house. Not an HD special by any means. I'm sure we'd all love to see yours to compare!

Brownstoner's forum is also excellent inspiration for before & after photos and any DIY'er!!
