Quote for one bedroom move

We have a fairly small one bedroom apartment (650 square feet) and are moving about 10 blocks away to a two bedroom (830 square feet) apartment. We are moving from a first floor apartment to a third floor walk up - large stairs. Our largest items are a king bed and a sectional couch. We were quoted $1,050 from Movers not Shakers and are waiting for a quote from Shea. Does the quote from Movers sound about right? I called them first since they seemed highly recommended on here.

holy cow.
i know there are insurance issues, etc.... but if you're only moving ten blocks away!!

i moved from a 750 sq/ ft floor through from Brooklyn to the Bronx a while back, and these guys from Brooklyn Chinatown did it for like $300 bucks. Everything was just fine, not a nick on anything.

We just used Moving Your Way - 718 788-4920. We, too, had a small apartment and were only moving about fifteen blocks. I cannot recommend them highly enough - they were superb and faster than any other movers we've used in the past.

We had four guys, the move took a total of 4 and a half hours, nothing got broken or went missing and the guys were all great. Even with the tip, we spent less than $700. Granted, we didn't move many large, heavy items like a sectional, but we were moving to a fourth floor walkup and had alot of boxes and other items.

I can't recommend them highly enough. Call and Igor will likely get in touch with you with an estimate, or have a look at their website at movingyourway.com.

I have used College Educated Movers - they are on Craigslist. Pretty efficient and reasonable.

That's pretty high. I used FlatRate, which was good, though I think on the high end of the price spectrum. I moved from a fifth floor walk up to an elevator building 1-2 miles away. I think it cost about $800.

thanks everyone. I got several quotes around the same amount. We seem to have packed a lot of stuff into our one bedroom.

We ended up using movers not shakers. They did a good job - four guys and two of them seemed to do most of the work - and it took much of the day. Other than breaking three inexpensive wine glasses everything was OK. Nacho was our favorite mover.

They did not stink up our bathroom as other posters have mentioned but they did smoke right outside of the open front doors and filled the hallway with it. Not really the first impression we were going for in our co-op.

We didn't have an awkward tip encounter. So, everything went fine, not overly impressed but I didn't feel like it was a waste of money because I didn't want to move up three flights.
