need to update an old copper water heater - how much is this worth?
We've had many people (contractors, plumbers, gas company) mention that our 30+ year old water heater (solid copper) is worth some money even when it dies. Well, it is dying and we are wondering what kind of money and how should we sell it to someone (the copper is the valuable part). Anyone know anything about this?

You take it to a scrap metal place. There are a couple down by Lowes.

It depends on the weight and if there are any other metals. If the copper is not mixed with other metals you will get more per pound. The last time I scrapped copper it was close to $3.00 per pound.

You've probably got an old Trageser water heater?
It's true it's got some value to it, but in order to get that money, you'd have to go through considerable effort to get it to a scrap yard.
It's real value is little more than the fact someone may be willing to come and get it out of your house for free.
Kind of like clawfoot tubs and fancy old radiators.
As Iknow suggested, that water heater contains much more than just copper. It's got a lot of worthless steel and insulation.

you could probably make a deal to scrap it in exchange for a substantial discount on a new water heater.
