Looking for 3 bedroom rental - October 1
Hi,
My two girl friends and I are looking for a 3 bedroom apartment in Park Slope for an October 1 move in date. I've been scouring Craigs List and we haven't come up with any good options. We prefer not to go through a broker and go directly through an owner. The maximum rent we would like to spend is $3,300/month. If anyone has any available apartments, please let me know. I appreciate any help and/or feedback.
Thanks,
Kristina

A 3-bedroom in Park Slope for no more than $3,300? Unless you are willing to live in pretty poor conditions I honestly think you need to either (1) kick that number up to $4,000 or (2) pick a different neighborhood. I can say with a fair amount of confidence that you are not going to find anything civilized for $3,300 in the Slope.

I have a fabulous 3BR, 1BA (8 total rooms) brownstone duplex in Bed-Stuy in the Stuyvesant Heights historic district (2 blocks from the A train at Utica) at $2700, ready for 9/15. I'm the owner, and live on the garden level. Your price sounds very low for Park Slope, but it goes pretty far elsewhere in Brooklyn. Let me know if you'd like to take a look.

I am guessing the original poster is fresh out of college or grad/law/medical school and hasn't had the punch-in-the gut experience of renting one's first apartment in NYC.
To the original poster: throw away whatever assumptions you have made about how much money you are going to spend in the next month. Double the amount of money you thought you would spend at least signing. Multiply your assumed monthly rent by 1.5. Get ready to line your parents up as guarantors. Get a salary letter from your employer. The list goes on and on. The NY Times actually just ran a pretty good piece on the basics of how to rent your first apartment.
