Late Victorian/Craftsman Mantels
We're renovating a center slope brownstone and we have three oak mantels we won't be needing. All three have the original tile surrounds, piers/mirrors and grates and are very similar in style. They're in good to pristine condition, and have never been painted. A representative photo is attached. We'd prefer to sell them outright, but would be willing to consider some sort of trade (skilled services we could use in our renovation are probably a better match than materials).

Just curious - why are you removing them? Aren't they original to the building?

Whatever you can make from the sale of these is nothing compared to the loss you'll realize at resale of your home. This is the type of original details home-buyers avidly search for, and pay a premium for in Brownstone neighborhoods! Out of curiosity I have to ask; why would you buy a historic home, at a premium price, if you're just going to destroy its historic character, and devalue your property? Trust me; I've seen it happen literally hundreds of times, and even the realtors would warn you away from this. The potential buyers asking about these mantles probably had the mantles removed from their homes years ago in a misguided restoration, and are desperate to replace them now.

Some people purchase a home to live in it and are not so concerned about the resale. Look at "Creating the New American Town House" and "Brooklyn Modern", both published by Rizzoli. If done well, a modern renovation in the sea of "original detail" homes is likely to be more valuable. But, unfortunately, well will have to wait and see. The owners of modern reno's are too happy with living in their homes. None for sale.

Just a friendly comment here- you are the scum of the earth. Why did you buy a brownstone if you really wanted a mcmansion? I'd like to tee off on you for being a rich prick with no taste but from the sound of your offer it seems like you cannot even afford the abortion (what you wrongly call a renovation) that you are planning. I especially like how you make the Center Slope distinction- I guess Park Slope is not swanky enough for a big shot like you what with all of us non-wall street riff raff. From the look of this ad, i'd guess you have a real self esteem problem. Maybe after you yank the soul out of your brownstone and turn it into a cookie cutter yuppie pad, you will feel better about yourself. I just hope that this slip in real estate prices forces you to sell low to someone who can appreciate that house. I'd be willing to bet that you bought it in the last 18 months at the top- lemming.
I'd like to propose a trade- I'll take the mantels off of your hands and in return I'll be happy to swing by and give you a quick local architecture appreciation lesson.
