Installing floor mural/tile persian rug

Installing floor mural/tile persian rug

We just purchased this beautiful 11.5 x 5.5ft tile rug. We are going to be installing it next month. We are in the process of tearing up the floor and we are going to set it. We would like to know if anyone has any sugesstions as to what the best way to apply it would be and what kind of base?

what is the existing floor and what is under it now? what other flooring will you be putting around it?
on another note, it is really very beautiful, where did you get it?

The existing floor is wood, as we were digging we found evidence of some kind of vinyl? Under that is a very sad looking sub floor. We are setting with 1/4 inch thick 12x12 terracotta tiles.
We got it from a company on the west cost called Artistic Abode Tile, they have all kinds of decorative tile including the rugs. The web address is www.artisticabodetile.com
We were out in California last year and visited "The Adamson House" and fell in love. We shopped all over for a Persian tile rugs but the cost was far more than we had expected. We then found this little company and now that we have the rug here I am even more amazed at the incredible quality for the price. I cant praise them enough!

How beautiful! Good luck with the installation.

gee- you know before I could give installation advice I'd really have to see them in person and install them as a test, of course. can you send them over to me? I'll be happy to play with them for you :-)

They're gorgeous!

I would suggest that, if you can afford it, have the subfloor replaced or leveled. is the subfloor pine planks? Could you replace it with plywood? If the floor isn't level, the tiles or grout could crack or buckle.

As for installation, wouldn't you use ordinary cement backer board with mortar? You might call the company and see if they have any special instructions.

Just cuz it's pretty doesn't mean it's not just tile... the preparations are the same for any tile. You have to prepare the floor for the tiles that are surrounding the design as well....

What's the question here? How to prep for tile or trying to figure out if there's something special with this design.

Yes how to prep for the tile :-)

Man, that's some nice tile!

That's beautiful

Cool. Where did you get it?

We got it from www.artisticabodetile.com.
All of their tile is hand-painted and the prices are affordable. I found another post about them on garden web with some beautiful pictures of a hearth and kitchen job provided tile for. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/build/msg090923453582.html?8

Tile envy.

I've seen pictures of the Adamson House, and I know what you mean. The only reason to move to California would be to live in one of those gorgeous Mediterranean houses.

Good luck, and please post a photo, or send the whole project to Mr. B. when you are done. I think a lot of people would be interested.

others have already said it but I'll add to it anyway and say that they are beautiful.

I'm home all day if you want me to test lay your tile for you. Of course it has to be done here in my house so I can see the result up close. :-)

Otherwise, like MM- serious fetal position tile envy

Thanks so much, we are so proud of them! I cant wait to get the floors primed so we can set them. We are just getting ready to put in our order for our hearth and kitchen with the same company. We are going to pull colors from the rug for the hearth. I am kicking around the idea of a mural for behind the range. My husband says I have gone tile crazy!

Sure are beautiful but, at $200/SF (according to the supplier's website), I think the phrase "the prices are affordable" may not be relevant to a whole bunch of folks peering into the financial fissure manifested by today's stock market numbers.

We actually got the rug for $125 per square foot, they worked with us :-) They are really nice people and are feeling the crunch as well so are willing to negotiate.

Posted by: lovemytiles at September 29, 2008 8:35 PM

I think the person who sold it to you should be knowledgeable enough to recommend what to do. I think either hardiboard if it is fairly level or you can use a self leveling cement. At that price do you really want to do it yourself? Do you feel confident enough to make a costly mistake? This isn't your usual DIY.

Yes the more I look into it the more I think we are going to just hire an installer for the rug part of it.

Of course I did not purchase a floor like that but I did just have a very professional and impressive installation of Italian porcelein tile for my entry, hall floor and laundry area done by Taub's Flooring on Hylan Blvd in Staten Island. Call and ask for Mike, and tell him that Bob's wife (from the band The Ghostriders) recommended their installation crew. They can send someone out first to assess the floor and see what prep work needs to be done. I'm very happy with the job they did.

Good Luck!
