Diesel Exhaust Smell inside apt

For the past few weeks I've noticed a (from time to time) strong diesel exhaust fume in my apartment, which I do not think originates from something easily explained like a truck parked outside my window, or otherwise. Does anyone have any ideas for the source of this smell and if there is anything I should do about it? Obviously I am concerned it may be very bad for your health. Thanks so much for any feedback.

Could be a neighbor's dirty oil burning furnace.

It is possible that you are smelling something coming from a sewer through a broken pipe or mis-installed drain. I once saw a house that had strange fumes. We finally found the problem: a broken sewer pipe in the corner of the basement.

Put batteries in your Carbon Monoxide Detectors...

A boiler that runs on heating oil essentially is a diesel, so that is the first on the list.
