Bay Ridge festivals
Im not sure if anyone was at the Greek Festival last weekend, but the atmosphere was great. No punks from Bensonhurst causing trouble or anything like that. I just noticed there is a 3rd ave festival coming this weekend. Does anyone know about the crowd that attends this? As we are moving to Bay Ridge soon, I was very impressed by the people by the Greek festival...a far cry from what you would get in Bensonhurst (18th ave feast).

Don't forget the Ragamuffin parade...I remember it from my childhood! It's a great day for kids, with everyone parading and standing by in their Halloween costumes. It's this Saturday, 9/27 on 3rd Avenue.

the 3rd ave. festival is huge...it runs from 99th street to 60 something. Food, music, games, rides, merchants.
If you live in Bay Ridge, you somehow end up there, you can't avoid it.
I found a schedule of events on line, but now can't seem to find it, now. If I come across it, will post it.
You should check it out, it's a fun day.

It's big and it's very crowded. Thirty blocks of 3rd Ave get shut down for the Ragamuffin parade on Saturday and the street festival on Sunday. If you come, the R train or a bicycle is your best bet because parking can be ridiculous around here.

Ill just park in my NEW driveway on 85th st!

I'm cringing, waiting for Halloween. That's when they do Haunted Halloween, or whatever it's called, in Owl's Head Park. The immediate neighborhood becomes a mob scene, especially they shut the Haunted Walk down and thousands of kids descend on local homes for their sugar fix.
I want a government subsidy of my candy supply because of that event. I went through 15 pounds last year.

I will be workinig the Bay Ridge Food Coop table at the 3rd ave festival so stop by and say hello. I think our table will be in the 80s or 90s somewhere. The 3rd ave festival can be a mob scene (no pun intended) but not in a bad way.
If you have children check out the raggamuffin parade this Saturday. It runs along 3rd and the children dress in costumes.
But my favorite Bay Ridge Festival is the Harvest Fair sponsored by the Narrows Botanical Garden (did you even know bay ridge had its own botanical garden?) Check out their website for info: http://www.narrowsbg.org/ They run other events through the year, like outdoor movies in the summer and various concerts.
welcome to the nabe

Please tell me none of these festivals are over run by blow out haircut punks like at the 18th Ave feast...! Im really impressed by the Park Slope type of people in Bay Ridge and Im hoping its not too good to be true.

My neighbor, Joe, will be working the Food Coop table too.
The Harvest Festival also has the canine costume contest, right?
The Third Ave festival has all kinds of people. Yeah, you get some mutants like any large street festival, especially hanging out around the boombox car club dorks who usually have a "booth" in the low 70s.
Hope the belly dancers are back this year.

I'd rather Bensonhurst punks than Park Slope snots any day.

yes, harvest festival has costume contest for dogs.

Its not about punks or snots...its about crazy kids fighting...smoking blunts...drinking 40s...breaking glass bottles on my street...walking around drunk yelling stuff to my wife and just acting like animals. I wont miss that for sure.

Way too many cops for that to go on for long. The mayor and all the local politicos show up at this festival so they try to keep it orderly.

This will be great then!

When I was a kid, Every year I used to see a guy with a huge yellow snake around his neck at the festival. Does he still walk around with it? What happened to that guy?
Posted by: bayridgegirl at September 23, 2008 6:33 PM
hahaha...ya, I saw that guy last month at Coney Island. He has the bird too...I think its a parrot or something similar. One of the guys I was with actually knew him and said he has been walking around with animals his whole life.

I think this guy also used to hang out on 5th ave in Park Slope. When I used to live there 10 years ago, before 5th ave was the "it" ave, there used to be a guy with a huge yellow snake that used to hang around on 4th st and 5th ave.
