What the heck is this?
What the heck is this?
I found this behind another one of the walls being opened yesterday, adding it to the tally of 3 bottles (one from 1854) and 4 soaps.

Any thoughts?

a doorknob?

I'm pretty sure that is a weight (dumbbell), even if it's not too heavy. I have a friend who has collected several antique dumbbells carved from wood that look similar. I think they may have been fashionable for exercise more for the movement and aesthetic rather than to bulk up.

it's a wooden dumbell, common around 1890-1910

that is so cool!

Great find! Feel the burn!

Uh, I wouldn't be holding that in my bare hand if I were you...
Posted by: BlackieJones at August 27, 2008 1:49 PM
no way is it a dumbbell - it ways less than an apple/can of coke etc
I originally thought it might be some kind of antique rattle when I first found it but what kind of masochist would give their kid something hard and wood to bang themselves on the head.
Cheers,
Dean
btw. BlackieJones....how come?

Dean, are you doing a gut renovation? Are you going to post some before/after pics? Do you have any details left? I'm such a voyeur.
Posted by: bayridgegirl at August 27, 2008 2:58 PM
It's a rattle for a bear cub.
Posted by: James Patience at August 27, 2008 3:04 PM
Yeah Dean, show us your details...pretty please?
Posted by: TownhouseLady at August 27, 2008 3:11 PM
For darning socks? I don't know why it would be two-sided though.

It's Biff Champion's Prostate Stimulator! He and Dave take turn on it....

I see, so in fact I also have an asshole fixation.
Posted by: dittoburg at August 27, 2008 3:30 PM
Baby rattle could certainly be made of wood or metal, but check this out - http://cgi.ebay.com/ANTIQUE-childs-toy-primitive-1-LB-barbell-wooden-YMCA_W0QQitemZ280245375523QQcmdZViewItem

Twat--don't even try coming back from that one. Ditto totally pwned you.
Leave you alone? Please. You do seem to have an anal obsession, and you are very angry. Hmmm....what are you not telling us?

So I call you an ahole in my 3.30pm post (which I'm guessing you probably are too dense to realize was an insult) and then you say - "no you are one." Was that meant to be a comeback?
Is your dad bigger than my dad too?

Shame on those for turning this thread into a pissing match. Poor guy (Dean) just wants to know what treasure he's found.
Leave your hatred towards each other for the HOTD threads.

Ok FINE!
They are old dumbells as has been suggested. The reason they were light is because dumbells back in the day were used for light callisthenics-type excercises. Its all spelled out on www.oldtimestrongman.com in the archive.

yes taking plenty of photos but will put together more details in a post once there is something substantial to post.
I'm just surprised how much crap is in these walls.
thanks for the identification about the barbbell.
Cheers,
Dean

A relative of mine in Europe found a mummified cat in their wattle and daub walls.

I hate to rain on your Victorian Jack LaLanne parade, but I think it is a Victorian darning egg. It's the right size for socks, baby clothes, as well as larger pieces of fabric. They are usually single eggs on a handle, I have one with a carved silver handle. The only other alternative is some kind of toy.
Posted by: Montrose Morris at August 27, 2008 5:44 PM
wouldn't be a darning egg but it does look like a kids toy dumbbell. Maybe from a play circus.
Posted by: bxgrl at August 27, 2008 6:40 PM
It's a monkey's maracas.
Posted by: James Patience at August 28, 2008 2:28 PM
i think its a foot massager.
put in on the floor and roll your foot over the middle.
...does it feel good?
then its a foot massager!
