Tile shops in Brooklyn

I've been shopping around for bathroom tiles and came across Bergen Tiles (on the corner of Flatbush Ave & Dean St).

Anyone have any experience or comments on Bergen Tiles? How do their prices compare to other shops?

Also, any other recommendations for a tile shop (I'm trying to avoid Home Depot and Lowes).

Thanks.

I'm a fan of Mondial Tile on 65th and 13th. I like their selection and the service is very good. I'm not sure how the prices compare.

If you already found something you like there then there's no reason not to go to Bergen Tile. If you want something really unique it's not the place to go. Not sure how often they update their inventory with new, updated materials and styles and colors of tiles.

For more unique tiles and wider selection, there's a newish place in Park Slope on 9th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. I went there but don't remember the name. It's on the South side of the street. Small storefront from the front but a large selection of tiles.

I second Mondial. There's also a deceptively good selection at A&K on 9th St across from C-Town. Owner and staff are quite gruff, but if you can deal, they have some good stuff.

If you have a contractor doing the tiling, and you pick out a Dal-Tile tile you like, there is a contractor-only Dal-Tile distributor (no showroom) near HD that can save you a bundle.

Another endorsement for Mondial on 65th St. That's where I got most of my tile, at those that weren't a contractor overage I got cheap. It's not a discount tile store but they have a great selection for the city. You'll have to hit NJ, LI or Staten Island to find a larger one.

I bought at Bergen for 1 bathroom and if you can find what you like their prices are quite reasonable.

bought a ton of wall tile and slate floor tiles from them for our bathroom and a granite countertop for our tenants apartment. no run around...when they say it'll be in or when they'll be there it's right on.

We just placed an order with A&K Tile on 9th St between 5th and 6th. They have a large selection, and spent quite a bit of time with us as we looked through and tried to pick things out. (We even ended up going with a couple of their design suggestions.) They are probably more expensive than Lowes or Home Depot, but it was worth it to us to get the personal attention.

Assuming the tile comes in as ordered, on time and with no problems, I would recommend them highly.

Classic Tile on 86th St near 15th Ave is excellent. Old-school Brooklyn, great selection, great staff. We just bought subway and glass tiles from them, and were very happy with the experience and pricing (they even gave us an espresso while we shopped--gotta love Italians!).

As a tile contractor, I would never say anything bad about a tile dealer, but isn't Bergen Tile closed?

In Brooklyn, I use A & K, 336 9th.

In Manhattan there are several more that I like.

I suggest my clients pick out stone or other dominant materials or fixtures first, where the choices are fewer. Finding tiles to go with that will be easier. Than the question is what are the other qualities required of the tile?

The question of where to get the tile is secondary. Ask your tile contractor.

Another vote for Classic Tile. We bought our blue glass subway tile for our kitchen backsplash there and had a very positive experience.

For our bathroom tile we bought from Cancos on W. 21st St in Manhattan, however, and also had a great experience.

I purchase all my tiles from a huge tile supplier in LIC. called International Tile, located on 21 street. They have a large selection of regular tiles along with fine imported pieces. I was first brought there about 10 yrs ago and had found a neighboring Contractor to do all my work. They moved from 30-50 21 street to a new location about 2 miles away, still on 21 street. Best of luck.

One more vote for classic tile on 86th St.
If you want nice tile, (and can tell the good tile apart when you see it) You should go there.

they have a huge selection and prices are very good.

I had a really bad experience w/Bella Tile. Originally they told me the tile would be ready in 7-10 days. Its' 4 months later and I just received the tile. They also lack in customer service. One woman was nice there - -Mandy & Anna (the owner's secretary). However, the rest of the store's employees(especially the manager) were the worst customer service people I have ever met. The owner -- while he tried-- did not make my experience w/the store any better.

On a good note -- I have had very good experiences w/Nemo Tile. They are honest, good prices (especially if you get an architect to order for you)-- and a pleasure to deal with. I would highly recommend their store in the city (their queens location was small.. but I did pick up tile there and they were very nice and helpful).

Someone at A&K Tiles needs to be shot for signing off on that website.....

Am I the only one who noticed it?

I also recommend Nemo Tile. The showroom is kind of a pain and they are always swamped... but for more basic things like small glass tiles or slate tiles, etc., I go to their warehouse which is just around the corner and they have the basics on display. They will sell you individual tiles if you need a few more tiles. As opposed to the Complete Tile Collection that sells you an entire box of tile if you need only a couple of additional tiles and if tiles arrive broken, they insist you did it because it's sidewalk delivery and therefore you can not prove that it arrived that way. I also agree with the poster above that Nemo is honest. Fast delivery and fairly priced.. next day if it's in stock.
