Moving Company recommendations?

We are looking for a cheap but reliable moving company. The move will be within the city and will be of a 1500 square foot apartment. Additionally, we will need our stuff to be stored for about 6 weeks (until we can move into our new place). I have already called Flat Rate and they are coming this week to give us a quote. Any other suggestions/recommendations?

thanks!

I was not happy with Flat Rate. They were definitely the cheapest company I found, but they were kinda rough with boxes clearly marked fragile and a few things broke. They also scratched the wood floor of our new place when they set up our metal bed (without asking me). I didn't tip them, and I told the supervisor why. He wasn't happy, didn't apologized and just drove off.

I'd go for someone else -- local -- unless price is paramount.

I had a fantastic experience with Excellent Quality Movers in Brooklyn. It was about $85/hour for 3 guys and big truck. They got us in and out in 6 hours (1000 square feet/2bd apartment, lots of furniture). They wrapped all furniture, were very careful with antiques, clean and presentable. They carry insurance. We did not use storage services so I can't speak to that. My only complaint was that at the end of the day we gave them $100 tip, and they complained it wasn't enough saying that standard was $50 per mover which would have been $150. I didn't give more, but then felt guilty afterwards. But frankly, I've never heard that there is a standard tip for movers...?

We had a very good experience with Shea Moving last August.

Also check out Movers Not Shakers. I believe they are based in Brooklyn, as well and offer flat rate pricing.

I had a great experience with Movers Not Shakers and found the estimate from Flat Rate to be twice what Movers Not Shakers charged me.
