sources for pull out closet hangers

The house I grew up in had very narrow bedroom closets. The solutions that the builders (in the early 1900s)was a brass pull out hanging rod. The whole hanging rod pull out with the clothes in place and you could store the clothes the full depth of the narrow closet on hangers. Has anyone seen a modern version of this system? We now have a similar narrow closet, and this would be an ideal solution.

I also have very narrow closets - about 17" deep. The closet is 48" wide with a 24" door centered on the closet. I placed two wooden hanging rods left and right of the door. they run from front to back (rather than the standard side to side). The closet works great.

do you mean shallow, (from front to back as you are standing facing it) with deep set ends (to the left and right)?

The doorway (and width) would be around 24". But the depth (looking in) is over 36". So what I'm looking for is a pull out hanging rod that would allow me to hang the clothes in a way that is perpendicular to the usual way, and pull the rack out to access them when needed.

thanks-

We have California Closets and a pull-out rod like you describe was added for extra storage. I bet some of the DIY closet people, like Elfa at the Container Store, sell these.

Most of those add on pull-out rods are valet rods for temporary "next day outfit" storage.
The force on the wall mount for a fully loaded extending closet rod would be pretty high. You might have to just use a 36" wide garment rack on wheels and pull it in and out of the closet. Or if you have high ceilings you could put in a lever type that swings down and out of the closet and has loops to hold the hangers in place on the rod.

Thanks all-

I've found a similar product - called an extension hanger-

This is very similar, though the one we had in our house growing up was longer, more substantial and had a ball bearing construction, so you could have a whole coat closet's worth on it.
