Recommendations and Estimates on Openning Up Fireplaces

I am thinking of openning up my fireplaces and have begun to get people in to give quotes. Does anyone have a recommendation based on their experience? I am planning to open both lines and make them wood-burning. In addition, I would like to make one available for an oven to vent out through the chimney. Any suggstions would be greatly appreciated.

I used Andre from A & A Fireplace. He relined 5 fireplaces for me and did a good job. I like him and think he is a straight shooter. I would recommend him. His number is 718-953-2836. You can tell him Lydia recommended him.

Thank you, Lydia.

Good to see this-I'm thinking of doing the same. Have you looked into Angie's List?

Hey there. We just finished opening up our parlor floor fireplace and converting it to woodburning. We used David Watt, and I highly recommend him. We are very happy with his work. He can be reached at 212-683-0028. One thing I would warn is that opening up a fireplace can be step into the unknown. We ended up having to do a lot more work then we suspected as when the wall was opened up the infrastructure we expected to be there was worthless, and we ended up having to completely rebuild the flu. Good Luck!

bklnrosie - could you let us know how much it cost to do the conversion?

I used A&A Firplace to rebuilt a flue for a gas fireplace. They did a good job. Its all the do, so they were in and out quickly.

Guest @ 4:34: WHat is Angie's List. Is that a list off contractors adn peoples opinions of them?

bklynrosie: Thanks for the heads up. I know now that the portion of the chimney above the roof will have to be redone, as the mortar is falling off and the bricks are loose. I can see from the chimney that there is no flue, so I am already prepared that major work will have to be done. I am ready for a total mess in the house! (OK, I lie. I am so not ready to deal with the mess, but it is something I need to accept and relax.)

Oldlady: Good to know they do gas as well. I guess you still need a flue for that too.

If someone quoted me $25K for the whole shebang, is that a good price?

Again, thank you everyone for your input.

Please look up previous posts on this issue under 'fireplaces' in the forum. You will get many other recommendations and pictures of what the work entails (including my earlier post on this topic).
